TLDR
An aerodynamically shaped vortex generator has been proposed, manufactured and tested in a wind tunnel as mentioned in this paper, and the effect on the overall performance when applied on a thick airfoil is an increased lift to drag ratio compared with standard vortex generators.Abstract:

Flow control on the NREL S809 wind turbine airfoil using vortex generators
TL;DR: In this article, the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil S809 without and with vortex generators was investigated using a computational fluid dynamic method of simulation, and the results were obtained with three-dimensional incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations.

Active flow control for power enhancement of vertical axis wind turbines: Leading-edge slot suction
TL;DR: In this paper, boundary layer suction along the chordwise extent of the laminar separation bubble (LSB) can prevent its bursting, eliminate/postpone its formation, avoid the formation of the dynamic stall vortex and trailing edge roll-up vortex, and delay the incipient trailing-edge separation.

Effects of leading edge slat on flow separation and aerodynamic performance of wind turbine
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of the leading edge slat on the aerodynamic performance of the S809 airfoil and the Phase VI blade were investigated and the effect of the geometric parameters were considered.

Effects of vortex generators on aerodynamic performance of thick wind turbine airfoils
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of vortex generators on aerodynamic performance of wind turbine airfoils were investigated at a Reynolds number of 1 million with two experimental setups, and the results showed that the maximum lift coefficient increases with VGs installed towards the leading edge of air foils but the lift at small angles of attack decreases when the chordwise position of VGs is smaller than 20% chord.

Improved performance of a slotted blade using a novel slot design
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discussed application of a custom optimized-design internal slot on a NACA 634-021 airfoil blade to allow ventilation of flow through the slot from the pressure side to the suction side of the blade, in support of delaying flow separation, and stall.

Investigation of flow behind vortex generators by stereo particle image velocimetry on a thick airfoil near stall
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of vortex generators on the flow near stall was investigated in a purpose-built wind tunnel for airfoil investigations on a DU 91-W2-250 profile.
