TLDR
In this paper, a discrete-continuous model to analyze a buried structure response to static surface loading as well as the soil gravitational load at "service-state" conditions is presented, which can represent positive and negative arching and provides an understanding of the effects that various variables have on the arching type and on the structure response.

Static soil culvert interaction the effect of box culvert geometric configurations and soil properties

TL;DR: In this paper, a small scale centrifuge physical model tests were conducted to investigate soil interaction (SCI) considering the height and density of soil above the culvert and the geometry of the box culvert.

Experimental Study and Numerical Simulation on Concrete Box Culverts in Trenches

TL;DR: In this paper, a full-scale experiment and FEM simulation were conducted to evaluate the variation of vertical earth pressures and soil arching in backfill and to examine the accuracy of the methods recommended by different design codes including the prevailing Chinese General Code for Design of Highway Bridges and Culverts based on the linear earth pressure theory.
Journal ArticleDOI

A model to assess the response of an arched roof of a lined tunnel

TL;DR: In this article, a model to analyze the response of an arched roof of a tunnel lining under a surface static loading is presented, which is suitable for depths of burial at which ‘arching’ can develop.
Journal ArticleDOI

Measuring Soil Pressure on a Buried Model Structure for the Validation of Quantitative Frameworks

TL;DR: In this article, the null response concept is used to measure the soil contact pressure on a buried structure as it interacts with the surrounding soil under load, and the results illustrate the effect of roof stiffness on the development of pressure at the roof center.
Journal ArticleDOI

The impact of soil properties on the structural integrity of high-fill reinforced concrete culverts

TL;DR: In this paper, numerical simulation and field tests were conducted to investigate the impact of soil properties on the structural integrity of reinforced concrete (RC) culverts under high fill, and important factors that influence RC integrity, such as ground bearing capacity and ground treatment, have been analyzed in detail.

Rational approach for assumed stress finite elements

TL;DR: In this paper, a new method for the formulation of hybrid elements by the Hellinger-Reissner principle is established by expanding the essential terms of the assumed stresses as complete polynomials in the natural coordinates of the element.
