An extension of the analytic hierarchy process for industrial R&D project selection and resource allocation
TLDR
In this article, an extension of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for priority setting and resource allocation in the industrial R&D environment is explored, and an AHP modeling framework is developed, and is linked to a spreadsheet model to assist in the ranking of a large number of project alternatives.Abstract:
The research and development project selection decision is concerned with the allocation of resources to a set of proposals for scientific and engineering activities. The project selection and resource allocation process can be viewed as a multiple-criteria decision-making problem, within the context of the long-range and strategic planning process of the firm. The purpose of this paper is explore the applicability of an extension of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for priority setting and resource allocation in the industrial R&D environment. In this paper, an AHP modeling framework for the R&D project selection decision is developed, and is linked to a spreadsheet model to assist in the ranking of a large number of project alternatives. Next, cost-benefit analysis and integer programming are used to assist in the resource allocation decision. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the suitability of this approach as an expert support system, and directions for future research and testing.read more

Preference programming for robust portfolio modeling and project selection
TL;DR: The Robust Portfolio Modeling methodology is developed, which extends Preference Programming methods into portfolio problems where a subset of project proposals are funded in view of multiple evaluation criteria, and a project-level index is proposed to convey which projects are robust choices and how continued activities in preference elicitation should be focused.

A Theoretical Framework for Managing the New Product Development Portfolio: When and How to Use Strategic Buckets

TL;DR: It is shown that time commitment determines the balance between incremental and radical innovation, and a normative theoretical framework is characterized that addresses a popular practice in NPD portfolio management: the use of strategic buckets.

The AHP approach for selecting an automobile purchase model
TL;DR: This paper presents a new methodological extension of the AHP by focusing on two issues: one combines pairwise comparison with a spreadsheet method using a 5-point rating scale and the other applies the group weight to a reciprocal consistency ratio.

TL;DR: The pattern of development of the AHP research field is examined using social network analysis and scientometrics, and its intellectual structure is identified, and two types of networks are analysed: social networks and cognitive mapping or the network of disciplines affected by AHP.

Incomplete pairwise comparisons in the analytic hierarchy process
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore various methods for reducing the complexity of the preference eliciting process in a group decision-making session, where the group structures the problem in a hierarchical framework and pairwise comparisons are elicited from the group for each level of the hierarchy.

An Experimental Comparison of Different Approaches to Determining Weights in Additive Utility Models
TL;DR: In this paper, Saaty et al. compared five conceptually different approaches in terms of their weights and predictive ability, and found that on average, the methods predicted about equally well, except for unit weighting which was clearly inferior.
