Analysis of Grain‐Boundary Impurities and Fluoride Additives in Hot‐Pressed Oxides by Auger Electron Spectroscopy

TLDR
In this paper, an Auger electron spectroscopy was used to characterize grain-boundary chemistry in MgO, Al2O3, and MgAl2O4 (spinel) hot-pressed with LiF or NaF.
Abstract
Auger electron spectroscopy was used to characterize grain-boundary chemistry in MgO, Al2O3, and MgAl2O4 (spinel) hot-pressed with LiF or NaF. The presence of additives (F, Na) at the grain boundaries was confirmed; observation of grain-boundary impurities in MgO extends previous studies.

A Review on the Sintering and Microstructure Development of Transparent Spinel (MgAl2O4)

TL;DR: A review of the densification mechanisms and the microstructural development for transparent spinel made by free sintering and by hot pressing is given in this article, where LiF is shown to have multiple behaviors: it initially wets spinel and forms a liquid phase at relatively low temperatures, which affects early-stage densification and also grain growth.

Sintering kinetics of a MgAl2O4 spinel doped with LiF

TL;DR: In this paper, the sintering kinetics of pure magnesium aluminate spinel, MgAl2O4, and that doped with LiF were determined through the use of the master Sintering curve technique developed by Su and Johnson.

The densification of MgO in the presence of a liquid phase

TL;DR: The use of LiF allows MgO to be pressed at 47,000 psi less pressure than what is normally used for pure MgOs and it is effective in the removal of surface impurities from the mgO.

Hot‐Pressing of MgO with NaF

TL;DR: In this article, the results of using NaF additives in hot-pressing MgO are described and compared with the results when LiF is used, indicating that the formation of a liquid phase, with resultant wetting and lubrication, is important, especially in the early stages of densification.
