TLDR
The contributions and merits of an applied behavior analysis approach to encouraging proenvironment behavior are reviewed, along with a discussion of ways behavioral science can play a greater role in protecting the environment as discussed by the authors.Abstract:
The contributions and merits of an applied behavior analysis approach to encouraging proenvironment behavior are reviewed, along with a discussion of ways behavioral science can play a greater role in protecting the environment. After presenting the most serious threats to the earth's environment, the targets, settings and techniques of the behavioral intervention literature are reviewed. It is argued that behavior analysis can play a greater role in solving environmental problems through (a) reexamination and expansion of intervention targets, (b) increased focus on long-term maintenance of pro-environment behavior, and (c) more effective dissemination of intervention strategies and research findings.read more

Encouraging pro-environmental behaviour : An integrative review and research agenda
Linda Steg,Charles Vlek +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the contribution and potential of environmental psychology for understanding and promoting pro-environmental behaviour is discussed. But, the authors focus on four main factors underlying human behaviour patterns: identification of the behaviour to be changed, examination of the main factors behind this behaviour, design and application of interventions to change behaviour to reduce environmental impact, and evaluation of the effects of interventions.

Environmental Sustainability and Behavioral Science: Meta-Analysis of Proenvironmental Behavior Experiments
TL;DR: In this article, a meta-analysis was performed on 87 published reports containing 253 experimental treatments that measured an observed, not self-reported, behavioral outcome, and concluded that cognitive dissonance, goal setting, social modeling, and prompts provided the overall largest effect sizes (Hedge's g > 0.60).

Beyond Freedom and Dignity
TL;DR: The belief that we are all free agents - responsible for our actions and in a position to be punished for our crimes, seems to be a belief that most people subscribe to as mentioned in this paper. But although such a belief may do wonders for our self-esteem and sense of human dignity, is there any evidence that it is true?
