Despite abundant sites and numerous archaeological excavations, the knowledge of Belgian cave entrance and rock-shelter sequences is still poor from a geological point of view. A systematic program of detailed stratigraphic recordings associated with diff erent analyses was recently undertaken in close collaboration with researchers from dif- ferent disciplines. O e objective was to better understand the sedimentary dynamics of these fi llings and to test their potential as recorders of Quaternary climatic variations. O e microstratigraphic study of the Walou Cave sequence illustrates this approach. Several clear climatic signals were identifi ed. O e validity of these signals and the type of environment were confi rmed by palynology. Furthermore, tephrostratigraphy together with the excellent correlation with the loess sequence of Middle Belgium gave this exceptional recording a coherent chronostratigraphic context, supported by radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dates as well as archaeology and palaeontology. O ese results lead to interesting prospects for research work in this type of environment, e.g. understanding better the context of the numerous prehistoric occupations that distinguish Belgian caves.read more

TL;DR: Charcoal occurs in the natural environment as either a result of wildfire or volcanic processes as discussed by the authors, and people may make charcoal, either for domestic or industrial use, either as a fuel for domestic heating and cooking through a range of industrial uses, such as iron smelting.

The Neandertal lower right deciduous second molar from Trou de l'Abîme at Couvin, Belgium
Michel Toussaint,Anthony J. Olejniczak,Sireen El Zaatari,Pierre Cattelain,Damien Flas,Claire Letourneux,Stéphane Pirson +6 more
TL;DR: Re-examination of the lithic industry of Couvin shows that it corresponds to the late Middle Palaeolithic rather than a transitional facies, and a new analysis of the site stratigraphy indicates that the unit situated above the archaeological layer in which the tooth was found is probably a palaeosol of brown soil type.

Chronostratigraphic context of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition: Recent data from Belgium

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present results from new fieldwork on long sedimentary sequences (Walou and Scladina Caves as well as the open-air site of Maisieres-Canal) combined with results of recent analyses on old material (mainly from the Spy and Trou de l'Abime collections), they enable establishment of a reliable and more accurate chronostratigraphic framework for the archaeological assemblages and provide new data on the humans responsible for them.
