TL;DR: Improved accelerator mass spectrometry 14C techniques are applied to construct robust chronologies from 40 key Mousterian and Neanderthal archaeological sites, showing that there was ample time for the transmission of cultural and symbolic behaviours, as well as possible genetic exchanges, between the two groups.

Chronostratigraphic context of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition: Recent data from Belgium

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present results from new fieldwork on long sedimentary sequences (Walou and Scladina Caves as well as the open-air site of Maisieres-Canal) combined with results of recent analyses on old material (mainly from the Spy and Trou de l'Abime collections), they enable establishment of a reliable and more accurate chronostratigraphic framework for the archaeological assemblages and provide new data on the humans responsible for them.

Belgian cave entrance and rock-shelter sequences as palaeoenvironmental data recorders: the example of walou cave

TL;DR: A systematic program of detailed stratigraphic recordings associated with diff erent analyses was recently undertaken in close collaboration with researchers from dif- ferent disciplines as discussed by the authors to better understand the sedimentary dynamics of these fi llings and to test their potential as recorders of Quaternary climatic variations.
