Thomas Higham,Katerina Douka,Rachel Wood,Christopher Bronk Ramsey,Fiona Brock,Laura Basell,Marta Camps,Alvaro Arrizabalaga,Javier Baena,Cecillio Barroso-Ruíz,Christopher A. Bergman,Coralie Boitard,Paolo Boscato,Miguel Caparrós,Nicholas J. TL;DR: Improved accelerator mass spectrometry 14C techniques are applied to construct robust chronologies from 40 key Mousterian and Neanderthal archaeological sites, showing that there was ample time for the transmission of cultural and symbolic behaviours, as well as possible genetic exchanges, between the two groups.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chronostratigraphic context of the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition: Recent data from Belgium
Stéphane Pirson,Damien Flas,Grégory Abrams,Dominique Bonjean,Mona Court-Picon,Mona Court-Picon,Kévin Di Modica,Christelle Draily,Freddy Damblon,Paul Haesaerts,Rebecca Miller,Hélène Rougier,Hélène Rougier,Michel Toussaint,Patrick Semal +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present results from new fieldwork on long sedimentary sequences (Walou and Scladina Caves as well as the open-air site of Maisieres-Canal) combined with results of recent analyses on old material (mainly from the Spy and Trou de l'Abime collections), they enable establishment of a reliable and more accurate chronostratigraphic framework for the archaeological assemblages and provide new data on the humans responsible for them.
Journal Article
Belgian cave entrance and rock-shelter sequences as palaeoenvironmental data recorders: the example of walou cave
Stéphane Pirson,Paul Haesaerts,Mona Court-Picon,Freddy Damblon,Michel Toussaint,Nick Debenham,Christelle Draily +6 more
TL;DR: A systematic program of detailed stratigraphic recordings associated with diff erent analyses was recently undertaken in close collaboration with researchers from dif- ferent disciplines as discussed by the authors to better understand the sedimentary dynamics of these fi llings and to test their potential as recorders of Quaternary climatic variations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adaptive Trade-offs Towards the Last Glacial Maximum in North-Western Europe: a Multidisciplinary View from Walou Cave
Luc Moreau,Christelle Draily,Jean-Marie Cordy,Katherine V. Boyle,Michael Buckley,Erik Gjesfjeld,Peter Filzmoser,Valentina Borgia,Sally A. Gibson,Jason Day,Robert Beyer,Andrea Manica,Marc Vander Linden,Marjorie de Grooth,Stéphane Pirson +14 more
TL;DR: This article investigated the impact of local climate and habitat characteristics on the behavioural variability that characterises Gravettian technological organisation compared to the previous Aurignacian, based on two assemblages from Walou Cave, Belgium.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Late Neandertal permanent lower left third premolar from Walou Cave (Trooz, Belgium) and its context
Michel Toussaint,Christine Verna,Adeline Le Cabec,Aida Gómez-Robles,Christelle Draily,Michael P. Richards,Stéphane Pirson +6 more
TL;DR: The implications of the existence of a clearly Neandertal premolar dating to the period of the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition in the Meuse river basin are discussed.
