TLDR
The results indicate that common contextual variations can lead to dramatic changes in behavior and that interactions between contextual factors are also important to consider.Abstract:
Many real world mobile device interactions occur in context-rich environments. However, the majority of empirical studies on mobile computing are conducted in static or idealized conditions, resulting in a deficit of understanding of how changes in context impact users’ abilities to perform effectively. This paper attempts to address the disconnect between the actual use and the evaluation of mobile devices by varying contextual conditions and recording changes in behavior. A study was performed to investigate the specific effects of changes in motion, lighting, and task type on user performance and workload. The results indicate that common contextual variations can lead to dramatic changes in behavior and that interactions between contextual factors are also important to consider.read more

A Meta-Analytical Review of Empirical Mobile Usability Studies
TL;DR: An adapted usability evaluation framework is presented to the context of a mobile computing environment and a qualitative meta-analytical review of more than 100 empirical mobile usability studies is conducted, finding that open and unstructured tasks are underutilized.

WalkType: using accelerometer data to accomodate situational impairments in mobile touch screen text entry
TL;DR: WalkType is introduced, an adaptive text entry system that leverages the mobile device's built-in tri-axis accelerometer to compensate for extraneous movement while walking and uses the displacement and acceleration of the device, and inference about the user's footsteps to classification.

Getting off the treadmill: evaluating walking user interfaces for mobile devices in public spaces
TL;DR: This work performs two studies evaluating the feasibility of walking user interfaces that adapt their layout when the user is moving and shows that the dynamic user interface performs at the level of its component static interfaces without any additional penalty due to adaptation.

Effect of use contexts on the continuous use of mobile services: the case of mobile games
Ting-Peng Liang,Yi-Hsuan Yeh +1 more
TL;DR: Results from a study of continuous use of mobile services in different use contexts as defined by task and consumption place suggest that service providers need to take into account the impact of use contexts and the needs of specific users when they design mobile services.

What we talk about when we talk about context
TL;DR: This paper suggests that the representational stance implied by conventional interpretations of “context” misinterprets the role of context in everyday human activity, and proposes an alternative model that suggests different directions for design.

There is more to context than location
TL;DR: A working model for context is introduced, mechanisms to acquire context beyond location, and application of context-awareness in ultra-mobile computing are discussed and fusion of sensors for acquisition of information on more sophisticated contexts are explored.
