TLDR
The primary mechanism for cat's claw anti-inflammatory actions appears to be immunomodulation via suppression of TNFalpha synthesis, which is an effective antioxidant but perhaps more importantly a remarkably potent inhibitor of T NFalpha production.

Herbal medications commonly used in the practice of rheumatology: mechanisms of action, efficacy, and side effects.

TL;DR: This review summarizes the efficacy and toxicities of herbal remedies used in complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies for rheumatologic conditions, by elucidating the immune pathways through which these preparations have antiinflammatory and/or immunomodulatory activity and providing a scientific basis for their efficacy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Antioxidant activity by DPPH assay of potential solutions to be applied on bleached teeth

TL;DR: AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodasG and VitE presented the highest antioxidant activity among substances tested in this study, and the DPPH assay provides an easy and rapid way to evaluate potential antioxidants.

Natural anti-inflammatory agents for pain relief

TL;DR: Although nonsteroidal medications can be effective, herbs and dietary supplements may offer a safer, and often an effective, alternative treatment for pain relief, especially for long-term use.

Biological basis for the use of botanicals in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis: a review.

TL;DR: This paper reviews the efficacy of some of the common herbs that have a history of human use and their anti-inflammatory or antiarthritic properties and suggests that the extracts of most of these herbs or compounds derived from them may provide a safe and effective adjunctive therapeutic approach for the treatment of OA and RA.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of freeze-drying and its implications for botanical medicine: a review.

TL;DR: A review of the existing research indicates that freeze‐drying has unanticipated and significant effects on the constituent profiles of medicinal plants that puts into question whether freeze-drying necessarily is the best method to preserve botanical medicines.

An Essential Role for NF-κB in Preventing TNF-α-Induced Cell Death

TL;DR: Reintroduction of RelA into RelA−/− fibroblasts resulted in enhanced survival, demonstrating that the presence ofrelA is required for protection from TNF-α.

Regulation of cytokines, cytokine inhibitors, and acute-phase proteins following anti-TNF-alpha therapy in rheumatoid arthritis.

TL;DR: In vivo administration of anti-TNF-alpha Ab results in the rapid down-regulation of a spectrum of cytokines, cytokine inhibitors, and acute-phase proteins, consistent with the concept of a cytokine-dependent cytokine cascade.

Suppression of nitric oxide synthase and the down-regulation of the activation of NFκB in macrophages by resveratrol

TL;DR: The flavonoids may be of value for inhibiting the enhanced expression of iNOS in inflammation through down‐regulation of NFκB binding activity.
