Catalase increases ethanol oxidation through the purine catabolism in rat liver.

TLDR
The present and previous data led us to propose that adenosine might be able to stimulate the metabolism of ethanol through different pathways, and it was concluded that the H2O2 needed for catalase activity is derived from the oxidation of (hypo)xanthine by xanthine oxidase and the oxide of urate by uricase.

Implications of plasma thiol redox in disease.

TL;DR: This review addresses mechanisms and implications of circulating plasma thiol/disulphide redox pools, which are involved in several physiologic processes and explored as disease biomarkers, and highlights mechanisms whereby thiol pools affect atherosclerosis pathophysiology.

Alcohol and Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Adding Fuel to the Flame

TL;DR: The epidemiological evidence for the association between alcohol and liver cancer is summarized, the genetic, oncogenic, and epigenetic factors that drive HCC development synergistically with ethanol intake are reviewed, and the essential molecular and metabolic pathways involved in alcohol-induced liver tumorigenesis are discussed.

Polyphenols in Kuding tea help prevent HCl/ethanol-induced gastric injury in mice.

TL;DR: KTPs are a kind of active component that have a strong preventive effect on gastric injury through the inhibition of gastric-acid secretion and the protection of the gastric mucosa.

Best Practices and Progress in Precision-Cut Liver Slice Cultures

TL;DR: The precision-cut liver slices (PCLS) were described as a promising tool and were expected to become the standard in vitro model to study liver disease as they tick off all characteristics of a good in-vivo model as discussed by the authors.

Ethanol-induced PGE2 up-regulates Aβ production through PKA/CREB signaling pathway.

TL;DR: Ethanol-induced eIF2α phosphorylation stimulates COX-2 expression and PGE2 production which induces the BACE1 expression and Aβ production via EP-2 receptor-dependent PKA/CREB pathway.

Overview: how is alcohol metabolized by the body?

TL;DR: Alcohol is eliminated from the body by various metabolic mechanisms, and variations in the genes for these enzymes have been found to influence alcohol consumption, alcohol-related tissue damage, and alcohol dependence.

Microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS): the first 30 years (1968-1998)--a review.

TL;DR: Enhanced ethanol oxidation is associated with cross-induction of the metabolism of other drugs, resulting in drug tolerance, and there is increased conversion of known hepatotoxic agents (such as CCl4) to toxic metabolites, which may explain the enhanced susceptibility of alcoholics to the adverse effects of industrial solvents.

The regulation of rat liver xanthine oxidase. Involvement of thiol groups in the conversion of the enzyme activity from dehydrogenase (type D) into oxidase (type O) and purification of the enzyme.

TL;DR: The enzyme appears as an oxidase in the supernatant of rat heart, intestine, spleen, pancreas, lung and kidney and the enzyme of all organs but intestine can be converted into a dehydrogenase by dithioerythritol.
