Centrifuge modeling of the behavior of caisson-type quay walls during earthquakes

TLDR
A series of 2-D centrifuge modeling tests with an in-flight shaker were carried out in order to model both the deformation characteristics of backfill and the seismic responses of caisson-type walls embedded in soils with various permeabilities as mentioned in this paper.

Insight into seismic earth and water pressures against caisson quay walls

Panos Dakoulas, +1 more
- 01 Mar 2008 -
TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed numerical analysis is presented for the response of a caisson-type quay wall from Rokko Island during the 1995 Kobe earthquake using the Pastor-Zienkiewicz elastoplastic constitutive model.

The stiffness degradation and damping ratio evolution of Taipei Silty Clay under cyclic straining

TL;DR: In this paper, the Ramberg-Osgood equation was used with a stiffness degradation model to calculate degraded secant moduli, which can be used to describe softening and hardening behavior under irregular cyclic straining.

Mitigation measures for pile groups behind quay walls subjected to lateral flow of liquefied soil: Shake table model tests

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present experimental results of a series of 1 g shake table tests on mitigation measures for a model consisting of a 3×3 pile group and a sheet-pile quay wall in which the pile group was subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading.
Journal ArticleDOI

Studying the effects of deformable panels on seismic displacement of gravity quay walls

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of deformable panels on reducing the seaward displacement, settlement and tilting of caisson quay walls were investigated for a 1 25 scaled-down caisson wall with two different seabed interface conditions.

Seismic performance of block-type quay walls with liquefiable calcareous sand backfill

TL;DR: Based on laboratory element tests on calcareous sand, centrifuge shaking table test, and high-fidelity numerical simulation, Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the seismic performance of block-type quay walls with liquefiable sand backfill.

Soil-structure-interaction analysis in time domain

John P. Wolf
TL;DR: In this paper, the procedures to perform nonlinear soil-structure-interaction analysis in the time domain are summarized, where the nonlinearity is restricted to the structure and possibly an adjacent irregular soil region.

Performance of caisson type quay walls at kobe port

TL;DR: In this article, in-situ soil freezing sampling and shake table tests were performed in order to understand the mechanism of deformation in the caisson walls in Kobe Port during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake.

Soil characteristics and ground damage

TL;DR: In this article, soil conditions in reclaimed islands which were devastated by extensive liquefaction during the Kobe earthquake are described together with the soil strength which was obtained from the laboratory tests on undisturbed samples.

Shaking table tests on seismic deformation of gravity quay-walls

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the role of subsoil liquefaction in the damage of quay walls during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake in Port Island and other reclaimed islands.
