TLDR
A significant difference in toxicity was found between the compounds: compounds I and II showed the highest, compound III the lowest, toxicity.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs): biochemistry, toxicology, and mechanism of action

TL;DR: The results clearly show that like "dioxin", the PCBs and PBBs elicit their effects through a cytosolic receptor protein which preferentially binds with the toxins which are approximate isostereomers of 2,3,7,8-TCDD.
Book ChapterDOI

The Digestive System

TL;DR: This chapter discusses the diseases and related pathologic alterations that may be encountered in the gastrointestinal tract and associated organs of various species of laboratory animals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians and provides an extensive review of these lesions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Great Lakes embryo mortality, edema, and deformities syndrome (GLEMEDS) in colonial fish-eating birds: similarity to chick-edema disease.

TL;DR: More reliable data show that the onset of the improvement of reproduction of Lake Ontario herring gulls coincided with the declines in organochlorine compounds and particularly 2,3,7,8-TCDD and PCB.

Journal ArticleDOI

Identification and toxicological evaluation of chlorinated dibenzofuran and chlorinated naphthalene in two commercial polychlorinated biphenyls.

TL;DR: It is concluded that evaluation of animal tests on PCB is made extremely difficult by the presence of chlorinated dibenzofurans in some commercial PCB preparations.

The Induction in Vitro of the Synthesis of δ-Aminolevulinic Acid Synthetase in Chemical Porphyria: A Response to Certain Drugs, Sex Hormones, and Foreign Chemicals

TL;DR: Evidence is presented that the control of ALA synthetase in the liver is by feedback repression in which heme may be the corepressor and no feedback inhibition was found.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polychlorinated biphenyls in the global ecosystem.

TL;DR: Polychlorinated biphenyls are widely dispersed in the global ecosystem, and are powerful inducers of hepatic enzymes which degrade oestradiol, which could account for a large part of the aberration in calcium metabolism which has been observed in many species of birds since the Second World War.

Chlorinated biphenyls in fish, mussels and birds from the River Rhine and the Netherlands coastal area.

TL;DR: Polychlorinated biphenyls are widely used in industry, and they are now making an appearance in the world's wildlife.

Chemical and Toxicological Evaluations of Isolated and Synthetic Chloro Derivatives of Dibenzo-p-dioxin

TL;DR: One of the toxic compounds known as hydropericardium factor (chick oedema factor) is 1,2,3,7,8,9-hexachlorodi-benzo-p-dioxin1.

Organochlorine pesticides in seals and porpoises.

A. V. Holden, +1 more
- 30 Dec 1967 -
TL;DR: Seals and porpoises in Scotland and Canada, far from the sites of application of pesticides, can accumulate high concentrations of residues in their blubber which cannot be confined to their place of discharge.
