Complete heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation of acetone, ethanol, and diethyl ether vapors with air over honeycomb-supported TiO2

TLDR
In this article, the complete oxidation of diethyl ether vapors to carbon dioxide was studied and an efficient quantum yield of complete oxidation based on electron transferred and the light incident on the photocatalyst were ∼9%.
Abstract
The heterogeneous reaction of acetone, ethanol, and diethyl ether vapors with air proceeding at room temperature over honeycomb supported TiO 2 under the action of mild UV light results in the complete oxidation of these compounds to carbon dioxide. Intermediate gaseous products of diethyl ether oxidation are acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate. Acetaldehyde is an intermediate in ethanol oxidation. Efficient quantum yields of complete oxidation based on electron transferred and the light incident on the photocatalyst are ∼9%.

Autoxidation of Acetaldehyde Initiated by TiO2 Photocatalysis under Weak UV Illumination

TL;DR: Ohko et al. as discussed by the authors studied the photocatalytic decomposition efficiency of gas-phase acetaldehyde using a titanium dioxide thin film under weak UV illumination and found that the apparent quantum yields (QY) for acetaldehyde degradation are determined by the normalized absorbed photon number (Inorm /s-1), a parameter defined as the ratio of the number of absorbed photons to number of adsorbed acetaldehyde molecules.

Photooxidation of acetone on TiO2(110): conversion to acetate via methyl radical ejection.

TL;DR: Evidence in this study for the ejection of organic radicals from the surface during photooxidation catalysis on TiO2 provides support for mechanistic pathways that involve both adsorbed and nonadsorbed species.
