Coulombic fission and evaporation of antimony cluster ions

TLDR
The preferential dissociation channels of singly and doubly charged antimony clusters have been determined from the unimolecular dissociation of energy rich cluster ions, using an ion stopping technique.
Abstract
The preferential dissociation channels of singly and doubly charged antimony clusters have been determined from the unimolecular dissociation of energy rich cluster ions, using an ion stopping technique. It is found that singly charged Sb+n clusters with 5≤n≤80 dissociate by loss of neutral molecules. Neutral dimer loss is observed for n=5, 6, 7 whereas for n≥8, Sb+n loses Sb4. The fragmentation of doubly charged Sb++n has been investigated above the critical size n++c=24 from which doubly charged clusters are detectable in mass spectra. On the time scale of the experiment, which is 1 μs≤t≤100 μs with respect to photoionization, the delayed Coulombic fission into two singly charged clusters competes with the evaporation of Sb4. It is shown that for the smaller Sb++n clusters with 26≤n≤36 the fission to two singly charged clusters is of relatively asymmetrical character, leading to the detachment of five and seven atom cationic fragments. In larger clusters n≥40 the fission is of more symmetrical character...

Morphology control of the supported islands grown from soft-landed clusters

TL;DR: In this article, a model involving a competition between the time for aggregated clusters to coalesce and the time interval between successive arrivals of clusters to grow the islands was proposed to account for the island morphologies observed.

Nanoclusters and nanocluster systems. Assembling, interactions and properties

TL;DR: In this paper, a classification of nanoclusters and nanosystems based on the method of their preparation is proposed, and the appearance of new properties upon combination of nan-clusters into a nan-osystem is noted.

Some aspects of the field evaporation behaviour of GaSb

TL;DR: It is proposed that the complex behaviour of GaSb originates from a combination of spatially correlated evaporation events and the subsequent field induced dissociation of cluster ions, the latter contributing to inaccuracies in the overall atom probe composition determination for this material.

Structure and spectroscopy of phosphorus cluster anions : theory (simulated annealing) and experiment (photoelectron detachment)

TL;DR: In this article, electron detachment measurements have been performed on singly charged phosphorus cluster anions with up to nine atoms, generated by a pulsed arc cluster ion source (PACIS), and transitions between the anion ground states and states of the neutral clusters are observed for all clusters, and vibrational fine structure in both dimer and trimer.

Gas-phase dissociation pathways of multiply charged peptide clusters.

TL;DR: Electrospray ionization is used to extend the study of cluster dissociation to peptides including leucine enkephalin with 7–19 monomer units and 2–5 protons, and somatostatin with 5 monomers units and 4 protons indicating that monomer conformational flexibility plays a role in peptide cluster Dissociation.

Generation of Metal Clusters Containing from 2 to 500 Atoms

TL;DR: In this paper, the main problems underlying the experimental study of particles with sizes between single atoms and the solid state have been solved: the formation of metal clusters, their individual detection, and the separation of beams with uniform cluster size.
