On the Structural Stability and Solvent Denaturation of Proteins I. Denaturation by the Alcohols and Glycols

TL;DR: The effectiveness of the alcohols as protein denaturants increases with increasing chain length or hydrocarbon content, in conformance of what is expected of the disorganization of the hydrophobic interior of these proteins revealed by their detailed three-dimensional x-ray structure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Statistical thermodynamics of nucleic acid melting transitions with coupled binding equilibria

TL;DR: Equations are developed to describe the shift in the temperature of the helix–coil transition when small molecules bind to nucleic acids and prescribe simple ways of plotting experimental data to evaluate transition and binding parameters.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of aqueous salt solutions on the activity coefficients of purine and pyrimidine bases and their relation to the denaturation of deoxyribonucleic acid by salts.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the denaturation of DNA by these concentrated salt solutions can be accounted for by their effects on the activity coefficients, and is attributable to the greater degree of exposure of the bases to solvent in denatured DNA than in the native form.

Phase equilibria in solutions of rod-like particles

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived a partition function for a system of rigid rod-like particles with partial orientation about an axis, derived through the use of a modified lattice model.
