TLDR
In this paper, a composite model has been developed in which water ingress may be estimated by changes in overall elastic behaviour of the polymer, and the composite model gives values of the coefficient of diffusion, D, for the bulk adhesive in satisfactory agreement with those obtained by gravimetric analysis.

Free/bound water absorption in an epoxy adhesive

TL;DR: The classic Fickian approach for describing the kinetics of liquid diffusion/absorption in solids was supplemented some 25 years ago by the 2-phase model of Carter and Kibler, referred to by them (modestly) as "Langmuir-type".

Environmental durability of adhesively bonded FRP/steel joints in civil engineering applications: State of the art

TL;DR: In this paper, the state of the art in terms of the durability of FRP/steel joints used in civil engineering applications is presented, and important influential factors relating to the durability are reviewed and different damage mechanisms are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thermal degradation behaviour and kinetic analysis of epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this paper, thermal degradation behavior and kinetic analysis of epoxy/montmorillonite nanocomposites were investigated by using a dynamic rate mode of a high-resolution thermogravimetric analyser (TGA).

The mathematics of diffusion

John Crank
TL;DR: Though it incorporates much new material, this new edition preserves the general character of the book in providing a collection of solutions of the equations of diffusion and describing how these solutions may be obtained.

Water absorption by an epoxy resin and its effect on the mechanical properties and infra-red spectra

TL;DR: A filled epoxy resin used as a structural adhesive and based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A cured with dicyandiamide has been subjected, in its bulk form, to ageing at 40, 55 and 70°C and ca. 100% relative humidity as discussed by the authors.

Environmental Failure of Structural Adhesive Joints

TL;DR: In this article, the deleterious effect of water on structural adhesive joints has been investigated using joints which consist of mild steel substrates bonded with a simple epoxy adhesive, and the mechanisms and kinetics of environmental failure have been identified and the instability of the joints in hostile environments successfully predicted from thermodynamic considerations.

A Comparative Study of Water Absorption Theories Applied to Glass Epoxy Composites

TL;DR: In this article, three types of glass epoxy composites have been studied and water diffu sion leading to saturation has been shown to occur under humid conditions for two of them, the third composite was seen to de
