TLDR
In this paper, a small lake close to a main highway in the Oslo area has been studied with regard to water quality, and the contribution of pollutants from the surrounding area, from the local atmosphere, and directly from the pavement was studied and related to the quality of the lake water and the outflowing water.

Review of ecological effects of roads on terrestrial and aquatic communities.

TL;DR: Roads are a widespread and increasing feature of most landscapes. as mentioned in this paper reviewed the scientific liter- ature on the ecological effects of roads and found support for the general conclusion that they are associated with negative effects on biotic integrity in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI

Urban stormwater quality: Summary of contaminant data

TL;DR: A literature review to identify and quantify contaminant data available on storm water is presented in this article, focusing on work that presented specific chemical, physical, and biological parameters rather than the traditionally used overall water quality parameters, such as biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids.
Journal ArticleDOI

Modeling and Management of Urban Stormwater Runoff Quality: A Review

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed recent regulations and studies related to urban stormwater runoff control and planning in the U.S.A. and discussed fundamentals of urban NPS pollution including transport processes and types and sources of pollutants.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of motorway runoff on freshwater ecosystems: 1. Field study

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of motorway runoff on the water quality, sediment quality, and biota of small streams were investigated over a 12-month period, and the greatest effect was observed at Pigeon Bridge Brook, a small stream receiving drainage from a 1,500m stretch of the Ml motorway.
Journal ArticleDOI

An exploratory study of urban runoff toxicity

TL;DR: An exploratory study of urban runoff toxicity was undertaken at 14 urban sites, including two sites receiving runoff from major multi-lane divided highways (>100,000 vehicles·day−1), to assess various types of toxicity, a battery of tests was used including Daphnia magna, Microtox™, sub-mitochondrial particles, and SOS Chromotest (for genotoxicity) as mentioned in this paper.

Poly cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Recent lake sediments—II. Compounds derived from biogenic precursors during early diagenesis

TL;DR: In this paper, a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) derived by early-diagenetic transformations of biogenic precursors are found in Recent sediments of four lakes ( Lake Lucerne, Lake Zurich, Lake Greifensee, and Lake Washington, northwest U.S.A.).

A Syringe Gas-Stripping Procedure for Gas-Chromatographic Determination of Dissolved Inorganic and Organic Carbon in Fresh Water and Carbonates in Sediments

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple method for determining dissolved inorganic carbon in water is described, where a 20 cm3 sample of water is drawn into a 50 cm3 polypropylene syringe and acidified by injection of 1 cm3 of dilute sulphuric acid.
