A general simulation/analytic approach for jointly assessing the reliability and performance of a communication/computer network is proposed and can derive sensitivity information about network performance with respect to various parameters-the first step for an effective network optimization algorithm.
Abstract
A general simulation/analytic approach for jointly assessing the reliability and performance of a communication/computer network is proposed. The advantages of this approach are the following: (a) it allows consideration of a variety of performance measures, (b) it allows consideration of a general structure of network components failure distribution, (c) it reduces complexity of the model and related calculations, (d) it is relatively simple to implement, and (e) it can derive sensitivity information about network performance with respect to various parameters-the first step for an effective network optimization algorithm. The method is illustrated in a number of examples using network connectivity and weighted network bandwidth as a measure of performance. >

Reliability engineering: Old problems and new challenges

TL;DR: The first recorded usage of the word reliability dates back to the 1800s, albeit referred to a person and not a technical system as discussed by the authors, and since then, the concept of reliability has become a pervasive attribute worth of both qualitative and quantitative connotations.

System and method providing utility-based decision making about clarification dialog given communicative uncertainty

TL;DR: In this paper, an interactive communications system is presented, which includes a component for analyzing sequential communications including speech, gestures and other modalities related to an underlying communicative intention, concurrently employing at least two of the communications in determining an action to facilitate achieving the intention.

A Particle Swarm Optimization Approach Based on Monte Carlo Simulation for Solving the Complex Network Reliability Problem

TL;DR: This is the first attempt to use PSO combined with MCS to solve complex network reliability problems without requiring knowledge of the reliability function in advance, and the proposed MCS-PSO can minimize cost under reliability constraints.

Chapter 11 Network reliability

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a range of issues related to the design and analysis of networks which are subject to the random failure of their components, including data communications networks, voice communication networks, transportation networks, computer architectures, electrical power networks and command and control systems.

From complexity science to reliability efficiency: a new way of looking at complex network systems and critical infrastructures

TL;DR: The modern view of Complexity Science is embraced to introduce innovative measures of the reliability performance of a network system, termed reliability efficiencies, intended to measure the global and local robustness of the network to faults of its components.

On Evaluating the Performability of Degradable Computing Systems

TL;DR: A hierarchical modeling scheme is used to formulate the capability function and capability is used, in turn, to evaluate performability, and techniques are illustrated for a specific application: the performability evaluation of an aircraft computer in the environment of an air transport mission.

Perturbation analysis and optimization of queueing networks

TL;DR: In this paper, a new time-domain-based approach is developed for the perturbation analysis of queueing networks, which can derive sensitivity information of the throughput of the system with respect to various parameters.

Closed-Form Solutions of Performability

TL;DR: This paper considers the modeling of a degradable buffer/multiprocessor system whose performance Y is the (normalized) average throughput rate realized during a bounded interval of time and shows that a closed-form solution of performability can indeed be obtained.
