Estimation of the modulation index of CPM signals using higher-order statistics

TLDR
It is concluded that, under significant noise degradation, only the scheme based on the fourth-order cumulant sequence can be used to estimate consistently the modulation index h in the range 0(h(1.0) - 1.1) .
Abstract
Three simple methods are proposed for the estimation of the modulation index of continuous phase modulated signals in noise. These methods employ the estimated autocorrelation and fourth-order cumulant sequences of the received signal after sampling at the symbol rate. Analytic expressions are derived for the asymptotic mean and variance of the estimated parameters which are corroborated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The performance of the methods is illustrated graphically and numerically. It is concluded that, under significant noise degradation, only the scheme based on the fourth-order cumulant sequence can be used to estimate consistently the modulation index h in the range 0(h(1. >

Cyclic spectral analysis of continuous-phase modulated signals

TL;DR: A novel representation of CPM signals as a sum of PAM signals is presented for both integer and noninteger modulation index cases, and the Nth-order cyclostationarity properties of binary C PM signals are derived in terms of N fourth-order temporal and spectral moment and cumulant functions.

Non data-aided estimation of the modulation index of continuous phase modulations

TL;DR: A new non data-aided estimator of the modulation index of continuous phase modulated (CPM) signals is proposed, based on the observation that the inverse of the index is the smallest positive real number a CPM signal should be raised to in order to generate a sinusoid of period 2T.

On the blind estimation of the parameters of continuous phase modulated signals

TL;DR: A blind estimator of the technical parameters of continuous phase modulated (CPM) signals consists in estimating jointly the modulation index, the symbol period and the frequency offset and the asymptotic behavior of the estimation error is studied.

On the Blind Equalization of Continuous Phase Modulated Signals Using the Constant Modulus Criterion

TL;DR: A blind equalization criterion that allows us to eliminate the latter indeterminacy of the constant modulus criterion is proposed and results sustain theoretical claims and illustrate the attractive performance of the proposed criterion.

Analytic performance evaluation of cumulant-based FIR system identification methods

TL;DR: The covariances of the third- and fourth-order sample cumulants of stationary processes are derived and the resulting expressions are used to obtain the analytical performance of such methods as a function of the coefficients and statistics of the input sequence.
