TLDR
In this paper, four methods are proposed for estimating the dominant time constant and dead time of a given process from a knowledge of its moments, s-plane, frequency or transient response data, which are faster and simpler and, in terms of accuracy and reliabiltiy, are comparable to the time domain least squares procedure for parameter estimation.
Abstract
Four methods are proposed for estimating the dominant time constant and dead time of a given process from a knowledge of its moments, s-plane, frequency or transient response data. The methods are faster and simpler and, in terms of accuracy and reliabiltiy, are comparable to the time domain least squares procedure for parameter estimation. Applications of the methods are illustrated with the aid of a dispersion model. A comparison is also made with other known techniques to demonstrate the superiority of the suggested methods.

Tuning of PID controllers based on gain and phase margin specifications

TL;DR: The results in this paper can be used to predict the achievable rise time of the closed-loop system, which is useful for self-diagnosis—a desirable feature of ‘intelligent’ controllers.

Method of and apparatus for evaluating the performance of a control system

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of evaluating the performance of a control system using a computerized device includes calculating a ratio of a first area and a second area associated with a peak value of a signal associated with the control system.

Robust PID controller for blood glucose regulation in type I diabetics

TL;DR: One of the recently developed PID tuning techniques is able to maintain the glucose concentration above the hypoglycemic range in 95% (and 100% with fine-tuning) of 577 diabetics tested, while rejecting both single- and multiple-meal disturbance(s).

Longitudinal dispersion of liquid flowing through fixed and fluidized beds

TL;DR: In this article, a systematical study of liquid phase dispersion by varying particle size, fluid velocity, fraction voids, and particle density was conducted and a generalized correlation applicable to both fixed bed and fluidized bed was obtained.

The diffusion model of longitudinal mixing in beds of finite length. Numerical values

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided accurate numerical values for the solution of the diffusion model of miscible fluid displacement in beds of finite length, where a solute, uniformly distributed throughout the medium at the outset of the experiment, is displaced by a solvent which may itself contain some of the solute.

Patterns of Flow in Chemical Process Vessels

TL;DR: This chapter focuses on two idealized patterns, plug flow and back-mix flow, which give information on how long various elements of fluid spend in the reactor but not on the detailed exchange of matter within and among the elements.

On the use of the imperfect tracer pulse method for determination of hold-up and axial mixing†

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discussed two problems connected with reduction of the experimental data obtained in such studies and proposed a semi-empirical method for correction of experimental data in such cases.
