Abstract
The purpose of this book is to provide a manual of foundation design and construction methods for the practising engineer. Synthetic and descriptive elements predominate the book while analytical considerations play a subordinate role. Sufficient soil mechanics is included to assist the student in relating and extending his knowledge to embrace the practical considerations involved in foundation selection, design and construction. The introductory chapter deals in general with site investigation and in particular with methods of drilling sampling and in situ testing of soils. Chapter two is on the general principles of foundation design. The chapter on design in relation to ground movements due to a variety of causes such as mining subsidence, machine vibration, frost heave and ground shrinkage should provide a useful introduction for those who have to deal with these problems. About 400 pages are devoted to the design aspects of the construction of spread, box and piled foundations.

A review on the angle of repose of granular materials

TL;DR: In this paper, an extensive review about the angle of repose angle theory, its definitions, method of measurements, appropriate applications and the influencing factors are presented. But, the authors do not consider the effect of the inter-particle properties of granular materials.

Load and resistance factor design (lrfd) for deep foundations

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the findings of a study to develop resistance factors for driven pile and drilled shaft foundations, which are recommended for inclusion in Section 10 of the AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications to reflect current best practice in geotechnical design and construction.
Journal ArticleDOI

Settlement of foundations on sand and gravel

TL;DR: In this article, the analysis of over 200 records of settlement of foundations, tanks and embankments on sands and gravels is described, and a remarkably simple picture has emerged relating the settlement to the bearing pressure, the breadth of loaded area and the average SPT blow count or cone resistance over the depth of influence.

Handbook of geotechnical investigation and design tables

TL;DR: In this article, the state of the Soil and its influence are discussed. But the authors do not discuss the characteristics of the soil and its properties in terms of its geology.

The electrical resistivity characteristics of compacted clays

William John McCarter
- 01 Jun 1984 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the electrical resistivity characteristics of a clay-water electrolyte system were investigated over a range of consistency indices and at varying degrees of compaction for two different clays, a Cheshire clay and a London clay.

Force at a Point in the Interior of a Semi-Infinite Solid

Raymond D. Mindlin
- 01 May 1936 -
TL;DR: In this paper, a solution of the three-dimensional elasticity equations for a homogeneous isotropic solid is given for the case of a concentrated force acting in the interior of a semi-infinite solid.

Hyperbolic Stress-Strain Response: Cohesive Soils

TL;DR: In this article, the divergent concepts of a stability analysis, as compared with a load-deformation approach to soil mechanics, are shown to be compatible within the framework of a hyperbolic stress-strain relation.

Some recent research on the bearing capacity of foundations

TL;DR: The authors summarizes the results of recent research on the bearing capacity of spread foundations of various shapes under a central vertical load and outlines the effects of found bearing capacity on the performance of the spread foundations.

Lateral Resistance of Piles in Cohesive Soils

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented methods for the calculation of the deflections at working loads, the ultimate lateral resistance, and moment distribution for laterally loaded single piles and pile groups.
