Journal ArticleDOI

Groundwater geochemistry and health: an overview

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors considered the control on the release of toxic elements together with the geochemical conditions that give rise to excess and deficiency of various elements in ground water, and pointed out an inverse correlation between water hardness and cardiovascular disease and the associated mobility of metals in soft waters.
Journal ArticleDOI

Statistical analysis of trace metals in the plasma of cancer patients versus controls.

TL;DR: The study indicated appreciably different pattern of metal distribution and mutual relationships in the plasma of cancer patients in comparison with controls.
Journal ArticleDOI

Leukemia incidence among people exposed to chronic radiation from the contaminated Techa River, 1953-2005.

TL;DR: Beginning in 1950, people living on the banks of the Techa River received chronic low-dose-rate internal and external radiation exposures as a result of releases from the Mayak nuclear weapons plutonium production facility in the Southern Urals region of the Russian Federation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparative Evaluation of Trace Metal Distribution and Correlation in Human Malignant and Benign Breast Tissues

TL;DR: The study revealed a considerably different pattern of distribution and mutual correlations of trace metals in the breast tissues of benign and cancerous patients.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessment of maternal-fetal status of some essential trace elements in pregnant women in late gestation: relationship with birth weight and placental weight.

TL;DR: Evaluation of Fe, Mo, Se and Zn levels in maternal and umbilical cord blood does not appear to be useful in the assessment of fetal growth.

The essential trace elements

TL;DR: Marginal or severe trace element imbalances can be considered risk factors for several diseases of public health importance, but proof of cause and effect relationships will depend on a more complete understanding of basic mechanisms of action and on better analytical procedures and functional tests to determine marginal trace element status in man.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chromium deficiency, glucose intolerance, and neuropathy reversed by chromium supplementation, in a patient receiving long-term total parenteral nutrition

TL;DR: Results suggest that relatively isolated chromium deficiency in man, hitherto poorly documented, causes 1) glucose intolerance, 2) inability to utilize glucose for energy, 3) neuropathy with normal insulin levels, 4) high free fatty acid levels and low respiratory quotient and, 5) abnormalities of nitrogen metabolism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cancer mortality correlation studies-III: Statistical associations with dietary selenium intakes

TL;DR: The results support the hypothesis that selenium has cancer-protecting effects in man and a change of diet aimed at increasing the dietary selenum supply is suggested as a possible means of lowering the human cancer risk.
