The problem of time in quantum gravity

TL;DR: The problem of time in quantum gravity occurs because "time" is taken to have a dierent meaning in each of general relativity and ordinary quantum theory as discussed by the authors, which creates serious problems with trying to replace these two branches of physics with a single framework in regimes in which neither quantum theory nor general relativity can be neglected.

Rotating black holes in dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory.

TL;DR: This work constructs generalizations of the Kerr black holes by including higher-curvature corrections in the form of the Gauss-Bonnet density coupled to the dilaton, and shows that the domain of existence of these Einstein-Gauss- Bonnet-dilaton (EGBD) black holes is bounded by the KerrBlack holes, the critical EGBD black holes, and the singular extremal E GBD solutions.

A length operator for canonical quantum gravity

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors constructed an operator that measures the length of a curve in four-dimensional Lorentzian vacuum quantum gravity, in which an SU(2) connection is diagonal and it is therefore surprising that the operator obtained after regularization is densely defined, does not suffer from factor ordering singularities, and does not require any renormalization.
Journal ArticleDOI

Black hole entropy without brick walls.

TL;DR: Using a Pauli-Villars regulator, it is found that 't Hooft's approach to evaluating black hole entropy through a statistical-mechanical counting of states for a scalar field propagating outside the event horizon yields precisely the one-loop renormalization of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking formula.
Journal ArticleDOI

Macroscopic quantum mechanics: theory and experimental concepts of optomechanics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review a set of techniques of quantum measurement theory that are often used to analyse quantum optomechanical systems, including quantum entanglement, quantum teleportation and quantum Zeno effect.
