The occurrence of a line at 2.1556 A in the L emission spectrum of cerium and two lines at 1.6679 and 1.8379 A in the L emission spectrum of samarium, reported many years ago, has remained a puzzle. These have now been identified as EXAFS minima occurring at the L absorption edges of the respective elements.

The L emission spectrum of praseodymium has been investigated using a 40 cm curved mica crystal spectrograph. Three new diagram lines at 1841 5 X.U., 1922 2 X.U. and 2076 1 X.U., corresponding to the quadrupole transitions LINIV,V, LIINVI,VII(γ8') and LIIINVI,VII(β7') respectively, have been observed for the first time. The data on the measurement of other L series lines of praseodymium have also been given with a view to removing the discrepancies in the earlier measurements.

The L absorption spectra of the light rare earth elements 57La to 63Eu in their oxides have been recorded photographically using a 40 cm bent crystal X-ray spectrograph kept inside a vacuum chamber. The vacuum chamber was found to be very useful for obtaining good quality spectrograms. The wavelengths and the energies of the L absorption limits have been reported. The white line has been found to occur just at the boundary and on the high energy side of each of the LIII and LII absorption discontinuities. The presence of the white line at the LIII and LII edges of Ce and Pr and at the LII edge of La has been reported for the first time. The values of the separation of the white line peak and the corresponding absorption limit have been reported.
