Image-based data interfaces revisited: Barcodes and watermarks for the mobile and digital worlds

TLDR
This paper highlights key attributes that distinguish these image-based communications interfaces from other noncontact modes of communication and make their continued use an attractive option.
Abstract
The ubiquitous availability of image sensors in smartphones and other mobile computing devices makes feasible new applications for both barcodes that encode data as image patterns and watermarks that hide data in images. To support these new applications, a number of new methods have been developed for these long-standing image-based data communication interfaces, methods that are better suited for use with the image sensors. In this paper, we review these developments and the applications they enable, drawing upon examples from our own prior work in this area. We highlight key attributes that distinguish these image-based communications interfaces from other noncontact modes of communication and make their continued use an attractive option.

Digital forensics of microscopic images for printed source identification

TL;DR: In this paper, microscopic images are used for printed source identification due to their high magnification properties resulting in detailed texture and structure information, and the proposed approach utilizes image processing techniques and data exploration methods to calculate many important statistical features, including: Local Binary Pattern (LBP), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Spatial filters, the Wiener filter, the Gabor filter, Haralick, and SFTA features.

Display Image-Barcodes Using Blue/Red Channel Embedding.

TL;DR: This work proposes an image-barcode for display applications that is simple, yet novel, encodes the data into a monochrome barcode and embeds it into a suitably chosen region in the blue/red channel of a displayed image.

Electronic marking and identification techniques to discourage document copying

Electronic marking and identification techniques to discourage document copying

TL;DR: This paper proposes techniques that discourage unauthorized distribution by embedding each document with a unique codeword, and describes one in detail, and presents experimental results showing that the identification techniques are highly reliable, even after documents have been photocopied.
