Longevity Complementarities Under Competing Risks

TL;DR: Dow et al. as discussed by the authors argued that there are inherent complementarities between investments in the prevention of cause-specific mortality risks, both on the individual level and on the aggregate level.

Risk assessment and other screening options for gonorrhoea and chlamydial infections in women attending rural Tanzanian antenatal clinics.

TL;DR: A risk score approach that was developed, based on sociodemographic and other factors associated with NG/CT infection, had a higher sensitivity and lower cost per true case treated than other approaches, although its positive predictive value was only about 20%.

T-cell responses to the components of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex in primary biliary cirrhosis

TL;DR: The authors have characterized the peripheral blood T‐cell proliferative responses of 24 PBC patients and 48 controls to the dominant autoantigen PDC, and its constituent components E1, E2 and protein X (which co‐purify), and E3, and found that peripheral mechanisms may play a significant role in maintaining self‐tolerance to PDC in the normal state.

Screening for sexually transmitted diseases in rural women in Papua New Guinea: are WHO therapeutic algorithms appropriate for case detection?

TL;DR: Data from a community-based study of STDs is used to develop and evaluate algorithms for detection of cervical infection with Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and for Detection of vaginal infection with Trichomonas vaginalis or bacterial vaginosis.

Adjunctive erythromycin treatment for idiopathic preterm labor: results of a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial.

TL;DR: Adjunctive erythromycin given to women treated for preterm labor less than or equal to 34 weeks is associated with prolongation of pregnancy and delivery at 37 weeks only in women with cervical dilatation at the beginning of treatment.

Maternal Gonococcal Infection as a Preventable Risk Factor for Low Birth Weight

TL;DR: Gonococcal infection appears to be responsible for a substantial proportion of premature births and is theoretically preventable by antenatal case detection and treatment.
