TLDR
Tests of intestinal absorption of 3 H-PteGlu in patients with pancreatic insufficiency revealed that they had a greater absorption of folate than did controls, suggesting that intraluminal pH effects on folate absorption in vivo and in vitro are related.

B vitamins, homocysteine, and neurocognitive function in the elderly

TL;DR: Advances in the understanding of this putative relation between inadequate vitamin status and loss of cognitive function in the elderly are likely to be slow and may depend on the outcomes of both prospective studies and longitudinal studies in which nutritional intervention is provided before cognitive decline occurs.

Membrane transporters and folate homeostasis: intestinal absorption and transport into systemic compartments and tissues.

TL;DR: This review focuses on the physiological roles of the major folate transporters, with a brief consideration of their impact on the pharmacological activities of antifolates.

Mechanisms of Membrane Transport of Folates into Cells and Across Epithelia

TL;DR: Until recently, the transport of folates into cells and across epithelia has been interpreted primarily within the context of two transporters with high affinity and specificity for folates, the reduced folate carrier and the folate receptors, but there were discrepancies between the properties and characteristics of folate transport in many tissues.

Are vitamin B12 and folate deficiency clinically important after roux-en-Y gastric bypass?

TL;DR: Prophylactic oral iron supplements are recommended to premenopausal women who undergo RYGB to learn whether the risk of developmg these deficiencies decreases over time and to determine how readily patients who developed metabolic deficiencies after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass responded to postoperative supplements.

Nutritional Deficiencies in Obesity and After Bariatric Surgery

TL;DR: Current knowledge of nutritional deficits in obese and overweight individuals and those that commonly present after bariatric surgery are reviewed and current recommendations for screening and supplementation are summarized.

Studies on the folic acid activity of human serum.

TL;DR: The method described is a valuable method for differentiating patients requiring treatment with folic acid from normal subjects and patients with primary vitamin B12 deficiency and the activity lost during the storage of serum not protected by ascorbic acid could be restored, for periods up to three months, by adding ascorBic acid to serum that is to be stored.

Absorption of drugs from the rat small intestine.

TL;DR: The relative rates of absorption of a large number of drugs have been measured by perfusing solutions of drugs through the entire small intestine of the anesthetized rat and the degree of ionization of an organic electrolyte in solution appears to be one of the most important factors determining its absorption from the rat small intestine.

Effect of Intraluminal pH on the Absorption of Pteroylmonoglutamic Acid

TL;DR: The administration of pteroylmonoglutamic acid and either sodium bicarbonate or phenytoin sodium in normal subjects and epileptics results in lower serum levels of folic acid than when administered alone.

Intraluminal pH of duodenum and jejunum in fasting subjects with normal and abnormal gastric or pancreatic function.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the electrode in situ provided the more reliable measurement and variations outside the normal range in normal subjects were noted in the presence of gastric hypersecretion and in pancreatic achylia and in adult coeliac disease.
