Abstract
This paper examines the problem of informant accuracy in the production of social network data, through the use of a self-monitoring network. This allows a comparison between cognitive network data and informants' interactive behavior. Against expectations, it turns out that informants are extremely inaccurate. In other words, informants' reports of their behavior bear little resemblance to their behavior. If an informant claimed to have communicated with some person "the most frequently" then, in fact, he communicated with that person between first and fourth most frequently only 52% of the time. The implications of our findings for sociometric and network analysis are: (1) Attempts to filter out noise in a sociometric network matrix by using sophisticated software are likely to be unproductive. This is because such manipulations assume a much lower level of noise than actually occurs. (2) Due to the low level of informant accuracy, theories of social structure built upon presently available network data...

Network data and measurement

TL;DR: Continued research on data quality is needed; beyond improved samples and further investigation of the informant accuracy/reliability issue, this should cover common indices of network structure, address the consequences of sampling portions of a network, and examine the robustness of indicators ofnetwork structure and position to both random and nonrandom errors of measurement.

Inferring friendship network structure by using mobile phone data

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that it is possible to accurately infer 95% of friendships based on the observational data alone, where friend dyads demonstrate distinctive temporal and spatial patterns in their physical proximity and calling patterns that allow the prediction of individual-level outcomes such as job satisfaction.

Demography and Design: Predictors of New Product Team Performance

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impact of diversity on team performance and found that functional and tenure diversity each has its own distinct effects, and that the greater the functional diversity, the more team members communicated outside the team's boundaries.

Cognitive social structures

TL;DR: A definition of cognitive social structures is presented, along with a review of some of the problems CSS might address, and three types of aggregations of CSS - Slices, Locally Aggregated Structures (LAS), and ConsensusStructures (CS) - are proposed to reduce CSS to a tractable two dimensions for analysis.

Beyond Rational Choice: The Social Dynamics of How People Seek Help

TL;DR: The Social Organization Strategy (SOS) framework as discussed by the authors is a complementary approach to social action in general and decision making in particular, which shifts the from individual "choice" to socially constructed patterns of decisions, including consultation with others.

The structural implications of measurement error in sociometry

TL;DR: It is argued that while methods of sociometric analysis have become increasingly more sophisticated they have failed to yield unequivocal results because they do not distinguish structural complexity from measurement error.

Systematic observation of natural social phenomena

TL;DR: In this article, a faulty definition of observation is proposed, which is based on misconceptions of how data are gathered and analyzed in social science, and it is shown that precise measurement by direct observation and recording of events as they occur is seldom done.

On the social structure of an ocean-going research vessel and other important things

TL;DR: In this paper, the social structure and conflict on an oceanographic research vessel is described both by ethnographic data and by a new numerical method, which is explained and discussed in detail.
