TLDR
In this paper, the performance of three rules for dealing with outliers in small samples of size n from the normal distribution N(μ, σ2) is investigated when the primary objective of sampling is to obtain an accurate estimate of μ.
Abstract
The performance of three rules for dealing with outliers in small samples of size n from the normal distribution N(μ, σ2) are investigated when the primary objective of sampling is to obtain an accurate estimate of μ. It is assumed that at most one observation in the sample may be biased, arising from either N(μ + aσ, σ2) or N(r, (1 + b)σ2). Performance of each rule is measured in terms of “Protection”, the fractional decrease in the Mean Square Error (MSE) obtained by using the rule when a biased observation actually is present in the sample. Although numerical results have been obtained for n ≤ 10 when σ2 is known, computational difficulties have prevented evaluation of protections when σ2 is unknown except when n = 3.

An Aptamer-siRNA Chimera Suppresses HIV-1 Viral Loads and Protects from Helper CD4+ T Cell Decline in Humanized Mice

TL;DR: A dual-function aptamer that targets both a HIV-1 surface protein and a critical messenger RNA can inhibit HIV infection in humanized mice and shows that the inhibition of two key molecules crucial for the HIV life cycle can in turn inhibit viral spread, pointing to an alternative therapy for this still burdensome infection.

The Interplay Between Sensory Processing Abnormalities, Intolerance of Uncertainty, Anxiety and Restricted and Repetitive Behaviours in Autism Spectrum Disorder

TL;DR: Sensory under responsiveness and sensory over responsiveness were significantly associated with repetitive motor and insistence on sameness behaviours, and the relationships significantly mediated by IU and anxiety were found.

Care and Handling of Univariate or Multivariate Outliners in Detecting Spuriosity—a Bayesian Approach

Irwin Guttman
- 01 Nov 1973 -
TL;DR: The objective of this paper is to present a method of detection of spuriosity using a Bayesian approach, and the posterior of the “shift parameter a” is obtained, and it is shown to be a weighted combination of (Univariate) generalized t-distributions.

The Subjective Nature of Outlier Rejection Procedures

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the subjective nature of outlier procedures and find that there are variations both between individuals in their reaction to surprising values and also between judgments made by the same individual on different occasions.

Sample Criteria for Testing Outlying Observations

TL;DR: In this article, the significance of the largest observation in a sample of size $n$ from a normal population was investigated and the authors proposed a new statistic, S^2_n/S^2, to test whether the two largest observations are too large.

Processing Data for Outliers

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discussed the problem of whether certain observations properly belong in the presentation of measurements obtained by an experimenter and suggested that a consideration of this sort is more properly made at the recording stage or perhaps at the stage of preliminary processing.

Rejection of Outliers

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed study is made of the effect of routine application of rejection criteria to replicate determinations of a single value, especially for triplicate and quadruplicate determinations.

Simplified Estimation from Censored Normal Samples

TL;DR: In this article, the mean and standard deviation of a normal distribution from a sample which is censored has been considered by Sarhan and Greenberg [1], who obtained coefficients for best linear systematic statistics.
