Kinetics of capillary tear flow in the Schirmer strip.

TLDR
Capillary flow of fluids in filter paper strips in vitro systems for the cases of unlimited supply and limited supply at constant rates, and in vivo using human subjects, who kinetically corresponded to limited supply having variable rates are analyzed.
Abstract
The popular Schirmer test of tearing ability heretofore has never been analyzed kinetically and the interpretation of the results is usually based on implicit, often erroneous assumptions. We have analyzed the capillary flow of fluids in filter paper strips in vitro systems for the cases of unlimited supply and limited supply at constant rates, and in vivo using human subjects, who kinetically corresponded to limited supply having variable rates. The effects of evaporation, surface tension, viscosity, paper pore-size, and the wettability of the cellulose fibers in the paper were also studied. The results show that in the case of unlimited supply, the fluid absorption is kinetically identical to fluid uptake by a horizontal capillary. This implies that the paper strip can absorb fluids only at a certain maximum rate which decreases with time. At lower secretion rates, the rate of wetting length increase is linearly proportional to the secretion rate provided that evaporation is prevented. Evaporation incre...

Frequent association of delayed tear clearance in ocular irritation

TL;DR: Results indicate strong association of delayed tear clearance with intrinsically and extrinsically generated ocular surface inflammation, which may set up a vicious cycle to aggravate the existing inflammation.

What does the phenol red thread test actually measure

TL;DR: It is probable that the PRT measures uptake of a (small) amount of fluid residing in the eye, stimulates a low degree of reflex tearing, and reflects the absorption characteristics of the thread dependent on the biophysics or composition of tears.

Analysis of tear uptake by the Schirmer tear test strip in the canine eye

TL;DR: It is suggested that the initial rapid rise in STT value represents uptake from the tear lake followed by a slower tear uptake of tears from steady state tear production, which shows substantial differences in rate of tear uptake at different time-points during the period of the test.

Tear volume in normal eyes and keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

TL;DR: Tear volume measurements were made in normal individuals and in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca using a fluorescein dilution method and there was no correlation between the values of volume and the results of the Schirmer test or the degree of Rose bengal staining.
