TLDR
In this paper, a review on experimental methods to determine magnetic surface anisotropies is given, and experimental results for well-defined single-crystal surfaces, both for out-of-plane and in-plane anisotropic properties are compared with Neel's phenomenological theory.

Domain theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define abstract bases as the bases of compact elements of algebraic domains and define the notion of ideal completion as the relation with which a basis can be equipped.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fabrication and Magnetic Properties of Arrays of Metallic Nanowires

TL;DR: Arrays of ferromagnetic nickel and cobalt nanowires have been fabricated by electrochemical deposition of the metals into templates with nanometer-sized pores prepared by nuclear track etching, displaying distinctive characteristics because of their one-dimensional microstructure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ferromagnetic resonance of ultrathin metallic layers

TL;DR: In this paper, the contribution of the technique of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) has made to the understanding of the magnetic behavior of ultrathin single films is reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Magnetism in ultrathin film structures

TL;DR: In this article, the results of recent experimental and theoretical studies of well characterized epitaxial structures based on Fe, Co and Ni to illustrate how intrinsic fundamental properties such as the magnetic exchange interactions, magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropies change markedly in ultrathin films as compared with their bulk counterparts, and to emphasize the role of atomic scale structure, strain and crystallinity in determining the magnetic properties.
Journal ArticleDOI

Magnetic anisotropy of multilayers

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of growth conditions on the magnetic anisotropy of Co/Pd multilayers was studied and it was shown that K s is mainly of the Neel type.

Magnetic properties of single‐crystal {110} iron films grown on GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy (invited)

TL;DR: In this paper, a theory of FMR which incorporates magnetocrystalline surface anisotropy is outlined and successfully interprets the thickness dependence of the FMR data in the ultrathin (L≲50 A) regime and shows them to be surface dominated.

Ferromagnetism near surfaces and in thin films

TL;DR: In this paper, the ferromagnetic order is modified near the surface of a magnetic crystal, which is studied most clearly in magnetic thin films consisting of only a few atomic layers.

Flat Ferromagnetic, Epitaxial 48Ni/52Fe(111) Films of few Atomic Layers

TL;DR: In this article, the magnetic properties of flat epitaxial 48Ni/52Fe(111) films are determined for (70 ≦ T ≦ 400) °K with an oscillation type torsion magnetometer, which can detect a moment of 5 × 10−8 G cm3.

Magnetic surface anisotropy of transition metals

TL;DR: In this paper, a model calculation for the computation of the magnetic surface anisotropy for transition metals is presented. But the model is based on the weak-hopping limit, the one-layer problem and the surface of a semi-infinite crystal.
Journal ArticleDOI

Magnetism of surfaces and interfaces

TL;DR: In this article, the experimental situation in connection with theoretical models is discussed, with a special emphasis on the experimental situations of surface magnetization, including dead layers, live layers, surface anisotropy, and magnetic proximity effects.
