TLDR
In this article, an interdisciplinary view of metal fatigue in polycrystalline metals is presented, where fatigue resistance is defined in terms of the difficulty of crack growth in one of two possible directions, the first being related to the texture of a material, and the second to the orientation of the applied loading system.
Abstract
An interdisciplinary view of metal fatigue in polycrystalline metals is presented. Fatigue resistance is defined in terms of the difficulty of crack growth in one of two possible directions, the first being related to the texture of a material, and the second to the orientation of the applied loading system. The fatigue initiation phase is considered to be negligible for polycrystalline metals, and fatigue limits are equated to one of two threshold conditions, one quantified in terms of microstructural fracture mechanics, and the other determined by continuum mechanics. The importance of the intensity and distribution of microstructural barriers to fatigue crack growth is underlined, especially in relation to mechanical conditions such as stress–strain state and to material conditions such as grain size and the shape and orientation of inclusions and their size relative to microstructural barriers.MST/1883

Multiaxial fatigue: An overview and some approximation models for life estimation

TL;DR: In this article, a brief overview of some important issues in multiaxial fatigue and life estimation is presented, including damage mechanisms and damage quantification parameters, material constitutive response and non-proportional hardening, cycle counting and damage accumulation in variable amplitude loading, and mixed-mode crack growth.

Relating Almen intensity to residual stresses induced by shot peening: a numerical approach

TL;DR: In this paper, a finite element to predict the residual stresses induced by shot peening in a metal part and to relate these stresses to Almen intensity is proposed; the aim is to provide the designer with a useful tool with which to choose the optimal treatment parameters with respect to the mechanical behaviour of the peened parts.

The effect of rapidly varying contact stress fields on fretting fatigue

TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental and analytical study of the effect of varying contact stress fields on the initiation life of fretted specimens is conducted for two high strength alloys commonly used in the aerospace industry, namely Al4%Cu and Ti-6Al-4V.

Effects of pitting corrosion on the fatigue behavior of aluminum alloy 7075-T6: modeling and experimental studies

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of pitting corrosion on the fatigue behavior of bare 7075-T6 aluminum alloy were investigated and it was shown that pitting degradation decreased the fatigue lives by a factor of about 6 to 8.

Fatigue crack propagation—an analysis

B. Tomkins
TL;DR: In this paper, the basic laws governing fatigue are derived theoretically for failure in both the high and low stress regions, and the material parameters controlling crack propagation determined, and a simple theory is developed to assess quantitatively the mechanism of fatigue crack propagation in metals.

Prediction of fatigue regimes in notched components

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple model was proposed which qualitatively accounts for all observed notch phenomena including non-propagating cracks and size effects, and quantitatively predicts the experimental fatigue failure limit of sharply notched specimens.

Fatigue cracks at notches

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors defined equivalent cracks in notched and unnotched situations as cracks with equal growth rates, and the concept of notch contribution to crack length was introduced.

A Relation between the Critical Alternating Propagation Stress and Crack Length for Mild Steel

N. E. Frost
TL;DR: In this paper, it was found that the relation between this critical alternating stress σ and the crack length l was given by σ3l = constant, and by means of this relation it was possible to correlate a wide variety of hitherto unrelated notch fatigue data.
