Abstract:
In voting, the joint decision is made based on the agents' preferences. Therefore, in some sense, this means that the agents' preferences are the " causes " of the joint decision. However, there is a different (and almost reversed) point of view: there is a " correct " joint decision, but the agents may have different perceptions (estimates) of what this correct decision is. Thus, the agents' preferences can be viewed as noisy reports on the correct joint decision. Even in this framework, the agents still need to make a joint decision based on their preferences, and it makes sense to choose their best estimate of the correct decision. Given a noise model, one natural approach is to choose the maximum likelihood estimate of the correct decision. The maximum likelihood estimator is a function from profiles to alternatives (more accurately, subsets of alternatives, since there may be ties), and as such is a voting rule (more accurately, a correspondence). This maximum likelihood approach was first studied by Condorcet (1785) for the cases of two and three alternatives. Much later, Young (1995) and Young (1988) showed that for arbitrary numbers of alternatives, the MLE rule derived from Con-dorcet's noise model coincides with Kemeny's rule (Kemeny, 1959). The approach 182read more

Increased space-bandwidth product in pixel super-resolved lensfree on-chip microscopy
TL;DR: By using the two-dimensional pixel-function of an image sensor-array as an input to lens free image reconstruction, pixel-super-resolution can improve the numerical aperture of the reconstructed image by ~3 fold compared to a raw lensfree image.

When do noisy votes reveal the truth
TL;DR: This work defines the family of pairwise-majority consistent rules, and shows that for all rules in this family the number of samples required from the Mallows noise model is logarithmic in theNumber of alternatives, and that no rule can do asymptotically better than the others.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that FRC can be leveraged in blind image restoration methods, such as image deconvolution, and is applied to perform image de-noising by frequency domain filtering.

The phylogeny and evolutionary history of tyrannosauroid dinosaurs.
TL;DR: The phylogenies illustrate that the body plan of the colossal species evolved piecemeal, imply no clear division between northern and southern species in western North America as had been argued, and suggest that T. rex may have been an Asian migrant to North America.

TL;DR: Comparative genomics of the so far uncultured cluster-2 Candidatus Frankia datiscae Dg1 with cultivated Frankiae has revealed genome reduction, but no obvious physiological impairments, and a multi-gene phylogeny placed the two cluster-1 strains together at the root of the Frankia radiation.
