Mechanism for fluorine inhibition of diffusion in hydroxyapatite.

TLDR
New NMR results for a mineral hydroxyapatite have been obtained which provide a detailed model of the locations of the impurity-fluoride ions in hydroxyAPatite, their influence on neighbouring hydroxyl ions, and a mechanism by which small amounts of fluorine can strongly inhibit diffusion.
Abstract
NEW NMR results for a mineral hydroxyapatite have been obtained which, in combination with recent precision X-ray crystallographic studies, provide a detailed model of the locations of the impurity-fluoride ions in hydroxyapatite, their influence on neighbouring hydroxyl ions, and a mechanism by which small amounts of fluorine can strongly inhibit diffusion.

Fluoride: Benefits And Risks of Exposure

TL;DR: This summarized current knowledge of the benefits and risks of fluoride ingestion indicates that fluoride can reduce the incidence of dental caries and that fluoridation of drinking water can provide such protection.

Implications of Atomic Substitutions and Other Structural Details in Apatites

TL;DR: The physical and chemical properties of interest to us are affected not only by the kinds and amounts of each type of atom present, but also by how the atoms pack together to build up the crystallites and, hence, the bulk material.

Morphogenesis and Structure of Human Teeth in Relation to Biomimetically Grown Fluorapatite−Gelatine Composites

TL;DR: In this paper, the structure and development of human teeth are compared to similar composite systems that develop in vitro under biomimetic conditions without the controlling influence of cells, and the results show that composite materials are impressive composite materials because of their complex organization and perfect adaptation to the demands of living organisms.

Atomic-scale bases for several properties of apatites

TL;DR: It is suggested that the lack of a local polar moment associated with Ca and F in fluorap atite may contribute to its chemical stability over hydroxyapatite (and, presumably, chlorapatITE) where such polar moments do occur.

Nuclear magnetic resonance line shape of fluorine in apatite

TL;DR: In this paper, the F nuclear magnetic resonance line in apatite (Ca5F(PO4)3) is interpreted in terms of a model in which only interactions within linear chains of F nuclei are taken into account.
