TLDR
In the early 1980's, microcellular polymers appeared to possess improved fatigue life and energy absorption characteristics as well as a higher specific strength as discussed by the authors, and they have been produced from a number of polymers ranging in relative density from 0.1 to 1.0.
Abstract
Microcellular polymer's produced by gas nucleation, refer to closed cell thermoplastic foams with a very large number of very small cells-typically 10 8 or more cells per cm 3 of order 10 μm in diameter. First produced in the early 1980's with the objective of reducing the amount of polymer used in mass produced items, these novel materials have the potential to revolutionize the way thermoplastic polymers are used today. Microcellular plastics have been produced from a number of polymers ranging in relative density from 0.1 to 1.0, containing 10 8 to 10 11 cells per cm 3 , offering the engineer a new range of properties for design. The microcellular polymers appear to possess improved fatigue life and energy absorption characteristics as well as a higher specific strength

Foaming of polypropylene with supercritical carbon dioxide

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of saturation time, foaming temperature, saturation pressure and depressurization rate on the foam structure and volume expansion ratio were investigated, and a likely foaming zone delimited by the upper and lower limits for foam temperature and saturation pressure was determined.

Continuous processing of low-density, microcellular poly(lactic acid) foams with controlled cell morphology and crystallinity

TL;DR: In this paper, a continuous processing of poly(lactic acid) foams with a microcellular structure, a high expansion ratio, and varied microcell morphology and crystallinity is reported.

The 3D structure of real polymer foams.

TL;DR: Using a new 3D image processing technique, six images of polyurethane foams were analyzed and measurements showed that the structure of real polymeric foams differs significantly from both equilibrium models and aqueous foams.

Polymer nanocomposite foam filled with carbon nanomaterials as an efficient electromagnetic interference shielding material

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented lightweight polymer composite foams filled with carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes and graphene as efficient electromagnetic radiation shielding materials, which should be lightweight, corrosion resistant and cost-effective.
