TLDR
In this paper, the existence of a hierarchy for the types of benefits of increased biodiversity is discussed, and the ways in which agricultural biodiversity may be increased to favour pest management are examined.

The role of midfield islets in pest control

TL;DR: The value of MI in crop fields as an existing ecosystem service in biological pest control is highlighted as the naturally occurring predators are able to reduce R.padi and minimize the need for insecticide applications.

A Conceptual Model to Design Prototypes of Crop Management: A Way to Improve Organic Winter Oilseed Rape Performance in Farmers’ Fields

TL;DR: In this article, the adverse impacts of pesticides on the environment and their inevitable negative side-effects on non-target organisms have been growing since the 1960s, and concerns about the adverse effects of pesticides have been increasing since the 1990s.

Preferences of the common garden ant (Lasius niger) in choice of aphid mutualist

TL;DR: It can be stated that A. fabae is a better ant-mutualist and that the addition of this aphid could very well amplify the effects of biological control of D. plantaginea by natural enemies in orchards.

Effect of herbicides and intercropping on weeds and yields of Maize and the associated intercrops

TL;DR: The herbicide pendimethalin as pre-emergence @1.5 kg ha in maize crop along with intercropping of any of the studied legume crops at the 1:1 row sowing ratio is the best combination for achieving desirable weed control, higher crop yields and greater LERs.

Philosophy of science in practice in ecological model building

TL;DR: In this article , a one-to-one interdisciplinary collaboration between an ecologist and a philosopher of science during science-in-the-making is described. But the identification, reconstruction and understanding of mechanisms is context-sensitive, and for this case study mechanistic modeling did not present a normative role but a heuristic one.

Fundamentals of ecology

TL;DR: This book discusses the role of energy in Ecological Systems, its role in ecosystem development, and its implications for future generations of ecologists.
Journal ArticleDOI

Organization of a Plant-Arthropod Association in Simple and Diverse Habitats: The Fauna of Collards (Brassica Oleracea)

TL;DR: The results suggest a new proposition, the resource concentration hypothesis, which states that herbivores are more likely to find and remain on hosts that are growing in dense or nearly pure stands; that the most specialized species frequently attain higher relative densities in simple environments; and that biomass tends to become concentrated in a few species, causing a decrease in the diversity of herbsivores in pure stands.
Journal ArticleDOI

Habitat Management to Conserve Natural Enemies of Arthropod Pests in Agriculture

TL;DR: The rapidly expanding literature on habitat management is reviewed with attention to practices for favoring predators and parasitoids, implementation of habitat management, and the contributions of modeling and ecological theory to this developing area of conservation biological control.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fundamentals of Ecology

TL;DR: Odum and Barrett as mentioned in this paper discuss the scope of ecology and its role in the development of communities and landscapes, and provide an overview of the major ecosystems types and biomes.

Vegetational Diversity and Arthropod Population Response

TL;DR: Vegetational diversity plays a central role in this research renaissance on cultural and biological controls in entomology because it involves mixing different kinds of plants in a plant community.
