Abstract
The mutagenicities of selenate (SeO 4 2− ) and selenite (SeO 3 2− ) were determined by two bacterial assay systems: Kada's rec -assay and Ames's Salmonella test. In both assays, these compounds were found to be weak mutagens. In the Salmonella test, selenate (0.05 revertants/nmole) and selenite (0.2 revertants/nmole) gave rise to base-pair substitution.

Biogeochemical cycling of selenium in the San Joaquin Valley, California, USA

TL;DR: Subsurface agricultural drainage waters from western San Joaquin Valley, California, were found to contain elevated concentrations of the element selenium in the form of selenate.

The role of metals in carcinogenesis: biochemistry and metabolism.

TL;DR: The oxyanions of vanadium, chromium, molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium are stable forms of these elements in high oxidation states which cross cell membranes using the normal phosphate and/or sulfate transport systems of the cell.

Analytical techniques applied to the speciation of selenium in environmental matrices

TL;DR: The toxicity and essential nature of Se in the environment depend on its concentration and the chemical forms in which it is present as discussed by the authors, and sensitive analytical methods are required for their determination in complex environmental matrices.

Methods for detecting carcinogens and mutagens with the salmonella/mammalian-microsome mutagenicity test

TL;DR: The methods described include the standard plate test, the use and storage of the bacterial tester strains, preparation and use of the liver homogenates, and the methods of inducing the rats for elevated microsomal enzyme activity.

Detection of carcinogens as mutagens: bacterial tester strains with R factor plasmids.

TL;DR: The utility of a simple test on petri plates for detecting chemical carcinogens as mutagens is extended by introducing two new bacterial strains which can detect with great sensitivity many carcinogens which it did not detect before or detected with less sensitivity.

Mutagenic activities of metal compounds in bacteria.

TL;DR: In the present report, 56 metal compounds were tested by the rec-assay and their capacities to induce reversions in E. coli Trp/sup -/ strains possessing different DNA repair pathways were examined.

In vitro and host-mediated "rec-assay" procedures for screening chemical mutagens; and phloxine, a mutagenic red dye detected.

TL;DR: Recombinationless mutant cells of Bacillus subtilis are more sensitive to the cell-killing action of typical chemical mutagens, such as ethyl methanesulfonate, hydroxylamine, mitomycin C, N -methyl- N ′-nitrosoguanidine or4-nitroquinoline- N -oxide than are the wild-type bacteria.
