In this paper, three bismuth complexes based on N-methyl-N′-oxide-4,4′-bipyridinium (MVO+), [Bi(MVO)X4(dmso)]·dmso [X = Cl (2), Br (3)], are reported.Abstract:
Three bismuth complexes based on N-methyl-4,4′-bipyridinium (hMV+), (hMV)[Bi(hMV)Cl5] (1), and N-methyl-N′-oxide-4,4′-bipyridinium (MVO+), [Bi(MVO)X4(dmso)]·dmso [X = Cl (2), Br (3)], are reported. All three compounds show luminescence in the solid state with maxima at 545 nm (yellow for 1) and 560 nm (orange for 2 and 3) with quantum yields up to 10 %. Upon UV irradiation, 1 undergoes a color change from white to blue accompanied by a reduction of the photoluminescence intensity. The analysis of the crystal structure of the three complexes points to a photoinduced charge-transfer (PICT) process at the origin of the photochromism in 1.read more

Photochromic hybrid containing in situ-generated benzyl viologen and novel trinuclear [Bi3Cl14]5-: improved photoresponsive behavior by the π···π interactions and size effect of inorganic oligomer.
TL;DR: Experimental and theoretical data illustrated that the size of the inorganic oligomer can significantly influence the photoresponsive rate of the viologen dication, and the π···π interaction behaves as not only a powerful factor to stabilize the viOLOGen monocation radical but also the second electron-transfer pathway, from a π-conjugated substituent to a viologe cation, for the photochromic process.

Bismuth‐Based Coordination Polymers with Efficient Aggregation‐Induced Phosphorescence and Reversible Mechanochromic Luminescence
TL;DR: Thorough investigations of the luminescence properties combined with DFT and TDDFT calculations revealed that the emission is due to aggregation-induced phosphorescence (AIP), and these materials are the first examples of mechanochromic phosphors based on bismuth(III).

TL;DR: A number of fascinating discoveries are described, including the first demonstration of redox-induced switching of NLO behavior and chromophores which disobey the otherwise universal rule that elongation of polyene systems leads to continual increases in quadratic NLO responses.
