Naming and Necessity

TLDR
In this paper, the authors make a connection between the mind-body problem and the so-called "identity thesis" in analytic philosophy, which has wide-ranging implications for other problems in philosophy that traditionally might be thought far-removed.
Abstract
I hope that some people see some connection between the two topics in the title. If not, anyway, such connections will be developed in the course of these talks. Furthermore, because of the use of tools involving reference and necessity in analytic philosophy today, our views on these topics really have wide-ranging implications for other problems in philosophy that traditionally might be thought far-removed, like arguments over the mind-body problem or the so-called ‘identity thesis’. Materialism, in this form, often now gets involved in very intricate ways in questions about what is necessary or contingent in identity of properties — questions like that. So, it is really very important to philosophers who may want to work in many domains to get clear about these concepts. Maybe I will say something about the mind-body problem in the course of these talks. I want to talk also at some point (I don’t know if I can get it in) about substances and natural kinds.

A neglected resolution of russell's paradox of propositions

TL;DR: It is suggested that Russell’s paradox is best regarded as a limitative result on propositional granularity, which should cast some doubt upon some of the uses to which modern descendants of Russell's paradox have been put in recent literature.

Emotion as a natural kind: Towards a computational foundation for emotion theory

TL;DR: In this article, the authors link two hitherto disconnected sets of results in the philosophy of emotions and explore their implications for the computational theory of mind, and conclude with some interdisciplinary reflections in defence of the hypothesis that emotions might be more fundamental in the organization of behaviour than cognition.

Legal burdens of proof and statistical evidence

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluate three influential attempts to explain why merely statistical evidence cannot satisfy legal standards and illustrate that purely statistical evidence can warrant high credence in a disputed fact without satisfying the relevant legal standard.

Divine Command Metaethics Modified Again

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a version of divine command meta-ethics inspired by recent work of Donnellan, Kripke, and Putnam on the relation between necessity and conceptual analysis.

A new route to the necessity of origin

Guy Rohrbaugh, +1 more
- 01 Oct 2004 -
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that there are necessary connections between material things and their material origins, and that the usual defences of such necessity of origin theses appeal to either a sufficiency of origin principle or a branching-times model of necessity.
