Naming and Necessity

TLDR
In this paper, the authors make a connection between the mind-body problem and the so-called "identity thesis" in analytic philosophy, which has wide-ranging implications for other problems in philosophy that traditionally might be thought far-removed.
Abstract
I hope that some people see some connection between the two topics in the title. If not, anyway, such connections will be developed in the course of these talks. Furthermore, because of the use of tools involving reference and necessity in analytic philosophy today, our views on these topics really have wide-ranging implications for other problems in philosophy that traditionally might be thought far-removed, like arguments over the mind-body problem or the so-called ‘identity thesis’. Materialism, in this form, often now gets involved in very intricate ways in questions about what is necessary or contingent in identity of properties — questions like that. So, it is really very important to philosophers who may want to work in many domains to get clear about these concepts. Maybe I will say something about the mind-body problem in the course of these talks. I want to talk also at some point (I don’t know if I can get it in) about substances and natural kinds.

Animacy and egophoricity: Grammar, ontology and phylogeny

TL;DR: This article argued that the grammatical animacy hierarchy corresponds to a three-step cognitive scale: the self is the model for other animate individuals, which are in their turn models for inanimate objects when understood as individual ‘things’.

Two Notions of Being : Entity and Essence

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors defend the notion of being in the sense of essence, arguing that although all entities have essences, essences themselves should never be thought of as further entities, somehow specially related to the entities whose essences they are.

Reductive Theories of Modality

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on four modes of truth: necessary truth, contingent truth, necessary truth and contingent truth plus a fth mode of possibility, which they call modality.

Knowledge and Design

TL;DR: The authors argue that the design account of knowledge is better thought of as an account of justice, as an explication, or a decision about what normative constraints to adopt, for the sake of some overall coherence.

Substances and space-time: What Aristotle would have said to Einstein

TL;DR: In this article, an exegetical analysis of the stripping argument of Metaphysics Z.3 is presented, and it is shown that the passage is not in propria persona and that the resolution of the aporia depends upon a careful consideration of the metaphysical relationship between essential properties and the subjects of which they are predicated.
