Naming and Necessity

TLDR
In this paper, the authors make a connection between the mind-body problem and the so-called "identity thesis" in analytic philosophy, which has wide-ranging implications for other problems in philosophy that traditionally might be thought far-removed.
Abstract
I hope that some people see some connection between the two topics in the title. If not, anyway, such connections will be developed in the course of these talks. Furthermore, because of the use of tools involving reference and necessity in analytic philosophy today, our views on these topics really have wide-ranging implications for other problems in philosophy that traditionally might be thought far-removed, like arguments over the mind-body problem or the so-called ‘identity thesis’. Materialism, in this form, often now gets involved in very intricate ways in questions about what is necessary or contingent in identity of properties — questions like that. So, it is really very important to philosophers who may want to work in many domains to get clear about these concepts. Maybe I will say something about the mind-body problem in the course of these talks. I want to talk also at some point (I don’t know if I can get it in) about substances and natural kinds.

The Dispositionalist Conception of Laws

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a notion of laws as essentially dispositional and show how the dispositionalist should respond to certain objections that such a view makes laws necessary whereas they are contingent.

The “codification debate” revisited: a conceptual framework to analyze the role of tacit knowledge in economics

TL;DR: In this paper, a more precise definition of "tacit knowledge" and a clear conceptualization of codification are proposed, and the issue of codifiability cannot be adequately addressed without accounting for these differences.

Probabilistic Causation and the Pre-emption Problem

Peter Menzies
- 01 Jan 1996 -
TL;DR: The pre-emption problem as discussed by the authors is defined as the case in which there are two processes leading to some effect, one of which goes to completion and brings about the effect, but in doing so cuts off or pre-empts the other process.

Anomia for people's names.

TL;DR: The study of this dissociation helps to clarify the difference in processing between proper and common names and provide support for the idea that an inability to retrieve arbitrary relations is the basis of the naming difficulty.
