TLDR
In this article, the authors conducted dissolution experiments in a two-dimensional cell with simple heterogeneous packing consisting of well-defined coarse lenses contaminated by NAPL surrounded by a clean fine sand matrix, and sufficient experimental conditions were tested to suggest three important mechanisms affect the overall mass transfer behavior in this heterogeneous system.

Interfacial area measurements for unsaturated flow through a porous medium

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used synchrotron based X-ray microtomography to investigate unsaturated flow through a glass bead column and found that the fluid-fluid interfacial area increasing as saturation decreases, reaching a maximum at saturations ranging from 20 to 35% and then decreasing as the saturation continues to zero.

TL;DR: In this article, the interfacial area is measured using a synchrotron-based CMT technique to obtain high-resolution 3D images of flow in a Soltrol-water-glass bead system.

DNAPL source depletion: linking architecture and flux response.

TL;DR: The relationship between dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) mass reduction and contaminant mass flux was investigated experimentally in four model source zones to investigate the relationship between flux and the up-gradient NAPL architecture.

Estimating mass discharge from dense nonaqueous phase liquid source zones using upscaled mass transfer coefficients: An evaluation using multiphase numerical simulations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare upscaled model predictions of flux-weighted downstream concentrations and source longevity to predictions derived from three-dimensional multiphase numerical simulation of tetrachloroethene (PCE)-NAPL dissolution for realizations of a statistically homogeneous, nonuniform aquifer.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mass transfer correlations for nonaqueous phase liquid dissolution from regions with high initial saturations

TL;DR: In this paper, a new mass transfer correlation was developed using NAPL dissolution data from a small 2D experimental cell that contained a well-characterized heterogeneous distribution of grain sizes.

An experimental study of complete dissolution of a nonaqueous phase liquid in saturated porous media

TL;DR: In this paper, the attenuation of gamma radiation was utilized to measure changing residual trichloroethylene (TCE) saturation in an otherwise water-saturated porous medium as clean water was flushed through the medium.
