TLDR
In this paper, it was shown that the specific heat exponent depends on the width of the $N$ range for continuous $\mathrm{AN}$ transitions, where AN is a tricritical point in the phase diagram.
Abstract
From adiabatic-scanning calorimetric results it is demonstrated that in mixtures of 9CB and 10CB, two compounds of the alkylcyanobiphenyl ($n\mathrm{CB}$) series, the nematic ($N$) to smectic-$A$ ($A$) transition becomes first order for narrow $N$ ranges. From the latent heats a tricritical point is located in the phase diagram. Measurements for 7CB+ 8CB mixtures show that the specific-heat exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ depends on the width of the $N$ range for continuous $\mathrm{AN}$ transitions.

Renormalization Group Studies of Statics and Dynamics of Liquid Crystal Phase Transitions

TL;DR: Renormalisation group (RG) calculations of the static critical behavior have been carried out for a large number of transitions found in liquid crystal systems and the results obtained from some of these studies are summarized in this article.

Field-induced dependence of rotational diffusion processes in smectic films deposited on a solid surface

TL;DR: In this paper, the rotational self-diffusion (RSD) coefficient of ultra-thin smectic films was calculated using the random walk theory, and a reasonable agreement between the theoretically predicted and experimentally obtained data on the RSD coefficient in the bulk of 4n-octyl-4 0 -cyanobiphenyl phase has been obtained.

Photoacoustic Investigation of the Anisotropic Thermal Behavior of Liquid Crystals

TL;DR: A completely automatic photoacoustic setup with microphone detection has been used to investigate the heat capacity and the thermal conductivity of not oriented or magnetically oriented liquid crystal samples of nonylcyanobiphenyl (9CB) as mentioned in this paper.

Flow induced transitions in smectic liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of an elongational flow field on the liquid crystalline A-C and N-A phase transitions were investigated using a mean field approximation, and it was shown that the presence of the flow made the A−C transition sharper; it becomes first order at high strain rates.
