Nurturing Mindfulness in Children and Youth: Current State of Research

TLDR
This paper reviewed the current state of research on contemplative practices with children and youth and suggested that meditation and yoga may be associated with beneficial outcomes for children and adolescents, but the generally limited quality of research tempers the allowable conclusions, and well-designed experimental studies that are grounded in developmental theory and measure multiple indicators of change must fully test the efficacy of such interventions.
Abstract
This article reviews the current state of research on contemplative practices with children and youth. It reviews contemplative practices used both in treatment settings and in prevention or health promotion contexts, including school-based programs. Although there is great interest and potential promise for contem- plative interventions, enthusiasm for promoting such prac- tices outweighs the current evidence supporting them. Interventions that nurture mindfulness in children and youth may be a feasible and effective method of building resilience in universal populations and in the treatment of disorders in clinical populations. This review suggests that meditation and yoga may be associated with beneficial outcomes for children and youth, but the generally limited quality of research tempers the allowable conclusions. Well-designed experimental studies that are grounded in developmental theory and measure multiple indicators of change must fully test the efficacy of such interventions. Mindfulness-based interventions in schools - A systematic review and meta-analysis

TL;DR: All in all, mindfulness-based interventions in children and youths hold promise, particularly in relation to improving cognitive performance and resilience to stress, however, the diversity of study samples, variety in implementation and exercises, and wide range of instruments used require a careful and differentiated examination of data.

Conclusions about interventions, programs, and approaches for improving executive functions that appear justified and those that, despite much hype, do not.

TL;DR: It is predicted that besides directly train EFs, the most successful approaches for improving EFs will also address emotional, social, and physical needs.

Enhancing cognitive and social-emotional development through a simple-to-administer mindfulness-based school program for elementary school children: a randomized controlled trial

TL;DR: The results of this investigation suggest the promise of this SEL intervention and address a lacuna in the scientific literature-identifying strategies not only to ameliorate children's problems but also to cultivate their well-being and thriving.

Effects of Yoga Versus Walking on Mood, Anxiety, and Brain GABA Levels: A Randomized Controlled MRS Study

TL;DR: This is the first study to demonstrate that increased thalamic GABA levels are associated with improved mood and decreased anxiety, and the first time that a behavioral intervention (i.e., yoga postures) has been associated with a positive correlation between acute increases in thalamus GABA levels and improvements in mood and anxiety scales.

Alterations in brain and immune function produced by mindfulness meditation.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a short program in mindfulness meditation produces demonstrable effects on brain and immune function, and suggest that meditation may change brain andimmune function in positive ways and underscore the need for additional research.

Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, and the Childhood Roots of Health Disparities: Building a New Framework for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

TL;DR: A scientific consensus is emerging that the origins of adult disease are often found among developmental and biological disruptions occurring during the early years of life as mentioned in this paper, and that these early experiences can affect adult health in 2 ways: cumulative damage over time or by the biological embedding of adversities during sensitive developmental periods.
