TLDR
In this article, the authors derived threshold conditions for critical ionization velocity interaction in the presence of additional ionization for relative velocities smaller than the critical velocity, self-sustained discharge for velocity greater than the Critical Velocity, and an explosive growth regime for velocity exceeding 1.5 times the critical Velocity.

Review of the CIV phenomenon

TL;DR: Alfven's critical ionization velocity (CIV) phenomenon is reviewed in this paper, with the main emphasis on comparisons between experimental and theoretical results. But the theoretical understanding of the process has grown rapidly during the last decade, mainly due to the introduction of computer simulation models which have to a large degree confirmed and extended earlier analytical theories.
Journal ArticleDOI

Critical ionization velocity experiments in space

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of all the experiments were analyzed with a view towards either optimizing or drawing conclusions about the conditions which lead to the propagation of critical ionization velocity (CIV) in space.

Origin and maintenance of the oxygen torus in Saturn's magnetosphere

TL;DR: In this article, a self-sputtering model was proposed for the formation of the E ring of Saturn's inner magnetosphere, where the particles are picked up by the planetary magnetospheric field and accelerated to corotation energies (of the order of 8 eV/amu).
Journal ArticleDOI

Interplay between collective and collisional processes in critical velocity ionization

TL;DR: In this paper, numerical simulations of critical ionization velocity (CIV) discharges have been performed, taking into account several collisional processes, including ground state ionization, excitation and ionization of metastable states, ion-neutral charge exchange, and electron-neutral elastic collisions.
Journal ArticleDOI

X-Ray Spectra of Comets

TL;DR: In this article, the energy flux required to generate the observed X-ray luminosity is well explained by the solar-wind power falling on the coma of a comet, and the nonthermal electrons accelerated by the interaction of the comet with the solar wind are responsible for the Xray emission.

Theory and Simulation of Turbulent Heating by the Modified Two-Stream Instability.

TL;DR: In this article, an analytical and numerical study of the nonresonant, modified plasma two-stream instability, which is driven by relative streaming of electrons and ions across a magnetic field B0 is presented.

On the origin of the solar system

TL;DR: In this article, a theory of the origin of the solar system is discussed, including introduction and general principles, accretion of planets, partial corotation of a magnetized plasma, and the structure of the Saturnian rings.
