TLDR
Using an external cavity semiconductor laser coupled to an additional empty cavity, optical pulses on the order of 100 ps duration at repetition rates of 1-2 GHz have been generated by careful adjustment of the length of the auxiliary cavity to match that of the main cavity and do not require any modulating signal to be applied to the laser diode as mentioned in this paper.

Generation of ultrashort pulses from a superluminescent diode with a monolithically integrated absorber in a coupled‐cavity configuration

TL;DR: In this paper, a superluminescent diode with a monolithically integrated absorber in an external cavity coupled to an additional empty cavity was used to generate extremely short pulses.

Mode locking of semiconductor lasers in a coupled-cavity configuration with a strongly coupled empty auxiliary cavity

TL;DR: In this paper, mode locking of semiconductor lasers in a coupled-cavity configuration with an empty auxiliary cavity is studied theoretically, and it is shown that the empty auxiliary cavities, when strongly coupled to the main cavity, can influence the pulsation situation significantly.

Self-phase modulation and spectral broadening of optical pulses in semiconductor laser amplifiers

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of the shape and the initial frequency chirp of input pulses on shape and spectrum of amplified pulses is discussed in detail and the case in which the input pulsewidth is comparable to the carrier lifetime so that the saturated gain has time to recover partially before the trailing edge of the pulse arrives.

Additive pulse mode locking

TL;DR: In this paper, a new principle of additive pulse mode locking is analyzed, which is shown to be operative in two-cavity soliton lasers, but it also permits mode locking with fibers in the positive dispersion regime.

Enhanced mode locking of color-center lasers.

TL;DR: A significant enhancement in the mode locking of a KCl:Tl color-center laser has been observed when a length of optical fiber having positive group-velocity dispersion was incorporated within an external control cavity.

Mode-locked lasers with nonlinear external cavities

TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear element, when introduced into an external cavity, is shown to improve the mode locking of a phenomenological laser model for homogeneously broadened systems.

Coupled-cavity resonant passive mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser.

TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear quantum-well reflective sample in a coupled-cavity configuration was used for resonant passive mode locking of a Ti:sapphire laser, producing tunable pulses as short as 2 psec.
