TLDR
In this paper, a review of the pathogenesis, classification criteria, staging system, and treatment of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is presented.
Abstract
Non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) usually affects adults younger than 50 years and frequently leads to femoral head collapse and subsequent arthritis of the hip. It is becoming more prevalent along with increasing use of corticosteroids for the adjuvant therapy of leukemia and other myelogenous diseases as well as management of organ transplantation. This review updated knowledge on the pathogenesis, classification criteria, staging system, and treatment of ONFH.

Decreased plasma CXCL12/SDF-1 concentrations may reflect disease severity of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of femoral head.

TL;DR: In this paper , the potential association of serum CXCL12 with disease severity in non-traumatic ONFH patients was investigated by measuring the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Polymer Scaffolds-Enhanced Bone Regeneration in Osteonecrosis Therapy

TL;DR: In this article, a review of applying polymers in osteonecrosis therapy is presented, and the development of biofunctionalized composite polymers based on the polymers combined with different bioactive substances is discussed.

A quantitative system for staging avascular necrosis

TL;DR: A new system is used to evaluate over 1000 hips with avascular necrosis during a period of 12 years, it allows accurate quantification in both early and later stages, does not use older, invasive diagnostic procedures, and incorporates the newer techniques of bone scanning and MRI.

A novel method of cross-linking ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene to improve wear, reduce oxidation, and retain mechanical properties: Recipient of the 1999 HAP Paul Award

TL;DR: A novel method of increasing the cross-link density is presented in which UHMWPE is irradiated in air at an elevated temperature with a high-dose-rate electron beam and subsequently is melt-annealed, which leads to the absence of detectable free radicals in the polymer and, as a result, excellent resistance to oxidation of the polymer.

The effects of glucocorticoids on adipose tissue lipid metabolism

TL;DR: Although considerable evidence supports the notion that GCs increase lipolysis through glucocorticoid-induced increases of lipase expression, they clearly have antilipolytic effects within these same tissues and cell line models.

Nontraumatic Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head: Where Do We Stand Today?: A 5-Year Update

TL;DR: Joint-preserving procedures are indicated in the treatment of precollapse disease, and studies of total joint arthroplasty have described excellent outcomes at greater than ten years of follow-up, which is a major advance and has led to a paradigm shift in treating patients.

Treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head with free vascularized fibular grafting. A long-term follow-up study of one hundred and three hips.

TL;DR: The results for 103 consecutive hips (eightynine patients) that had been treated with free vascularized fibular grafting because of symptomatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head were reviewed in a prospective study.
