TLDR
PAGnol-XL as discussed by the authors is the largest pre-trained model for the French language and achieves state-of-the-art performance in the abstract summarization task.Abstract:
Access to large pre-trained models of varied architectures, in many different languages, is central to the democratization of NLP. We introduce PAGnol, a collection of French GPT models. Using scaling laws, we efficiently train PAGnol-XL (1.5B parameters) with the same computational budget as CamemBERT, a model 13 times smaller. PAGnol-XL is the largest model trained to date for the French language. We plan to train increasingly large and performing versions of PAGnol, exploring the capabilities of French extreme-scale models.
For this first release, we focus on the pre-training and scaling calculations underlining PAGnol. We fit a scaling law for compute for the French language, and compare it with its English counterpart. We find the pre-training dataset significantly conditions the quality of the outputs, with common datasets such as OSCAR leading to low-quality offensive text. We evaluate our models on discriminative and generative tasks in French, comparing to other state-of-the-art French and multilingual models, and reaching the state of the art in the abstract summarization task. Our research was conducted on the public GENCI Jean Zay supercomputer, and our models up to the Large are made publicly available.read more

Adam: A Method for Stochastic Optimization
Diederik P. Kingma,Jimmy Ba +1 more
TL;DR: This work introduces Adam, an algorithm for first-order gradient-based optimization of stochastic objective functions, based on adaptive estimates of lower-order moments, and provides a regret bound on the convergence rate that is comparable to the best known results under the online convex optimization framework.

Attention is All you Need

TL;DR: This paper proposed a simple network architecture based solely on an attention mechanism, dispensing with recurrence and convolutions entirely and achieved state-of-the-art performance on English-to-French translation.

Glove: Global Vectors for Word Representation
TL;DR: A new global logbilinear regression model that combines the advantages of the two major model families in the literature: global matrix factorization and local context window methods and produces a vector space with meaningful substructure.

BERT: Pre-training of Deep Bidirectional Transformers for Language Understanding
TL;DR: BERT as mentioned in this paper pre-trains deep bidirectional representations from unlabeled text by jointly conditioning on both left and right context in all layers, which can be fine-tuned with just one additional output layer to create state-of-the-art models for a wide range of tasks.

Efficient Estimation of Word Representations in Vector Space
TL;DR: This paper proposed two novel model architectures for computing continuous vector representations of words from very large data sets, and the quality of these representations is measured in a word similarity task and the results are compared to the previously best performing techniques based on different types of neural networks.
