This paper describes the design and implementation of a flexible streaming video server and client testbed that implements both periodic broadcast and patching, and explores the issues that arise when implementing these algorithms.Abstract:Â
Multimedia streaming applications can consume a significant amount of server and network resources. Periodic broadcast and patching are two approaches that use multicast transmission and client buffering in innovative ways to reduce server and network load, while at the same time allowing asynchronous access to multimedia steams by a large number of clients. Current research in this area has focussed primarily on the algorithmic aspects of these approaches, with evaluation performed via analysis or simulation. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a flexible streaming video server and client testbed that implements both periodic broadcast and patching, and explore the issues that arise when implementing these algorithms. We present measurements detailing the overheads associated with the various server components (signaling, transmission schedule computation, data retrieval and transmission), the interactions between the various components of the architecture, and the overall end-to-end performance. We also discuss the importance of an appropriate server video segment caching policy. We conclude with a discussion of the insights gained from our implementation and experimental evaluation.read more

Video delivery technologies for large-scale deployment of multimedia applications
TL;DR: Three complementary research approaches are described: server transmission schemes using multicast, streaming strategies with application layer multicasts and proxy caching techniques, which discuss pros and cons of these technologies and provide the observations on current business solutions.
Streaming Video Traffic : Characterization and Network Impact
TL;DR: Very high variability in terms of the traffic volume with an order of magnitude or more increase in the offered load over tens of minutes is found, suggesting the potential benefit of a shared infrastructure that can exploit statistical multiplexing.

Best-Effort Patching for Multicast True VoD Service
TL;DR: This work proposes a new patching scheme, called Best-Effort Patching (BEP), that offers a TVoD service in terms of both request admission and VCR interactivity, and shows that BEP outperforms the conventional TVOD interaction protocols.

Overlay multicast for video on demand on the Internet
TL;DR: This paper proposes an overlay technique called Vcast for enabling multicast services on the application layer, as a way to support the implementation of Patching, and does not introduce any global topology for the overlay and therefore avoids control overhead to maintain it.

RTP: A Transport Protocol for Real-Time Applications
TL;DR: RTP provides end-to-end network transport functions suitable for applications transmitting real-time data over multicast or unicast network services and is augmented by a control protocol (RTCP) to allow monitoring of the data delivery in a manner scalable to large multicast networks.

Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP)
TL;DR: The Real Time Streaming Protocol, or RTSP, is an application-level protocol for control over the delivery of data with real-time properties that is intended to control multiple data delivery sessions, provide a means for choosing delivery channels such as UDP, multicast UDP and TCP, and provide a mean for choosing Delivery mechanisms based upon RTP (RFC 1889).

Proxy prefix caching for multimedia streams
TL;DR: This work proposes a prefix caching technique whereby a proxy stores the initial frames of popular clips, and describes how to construct a smooth transmission schedule, based on the size of the prefix, smoothing, and playback buffers, without increasing client playback delay.
