TLDR
The perfused human placental model provides a valuable method for the study of a variety of biochemical phenomena in a whole human organ and its use may further elucidate the role of this tissue in the maintenance of pregnancy, the transport of EFA to the developing fetus and the involvement of placental PG synthesis in fetal development and parturition.

Journal ArticleDOI

Lipid Metabolism in Pregnancy and its Consequences in the Fetus and Newborn

TL;DR: The nutritional status of the mother during gestation has been related to fetal growth, and excessive intake of certain long chain fatty acids may cause both declines in arachidonic acid and enhanced lipid peroxidation, reducing antioxidant capacity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Maternal essential fatty acid patterns during normal pregnancy and their relationship to the neonatal essential fatty acid status

TL;DR: The question arises whether the mother, under the prevailing dietary conditions, is able to meet the high fetal requirement for EFA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Placental Regulation of Fatty Acid Delivery and its Effect on Fetal Growth—A Review

TL;DR: There is little evidence to suggest that placental delivery of fatty acids limits normal fetal growth although the importance of the in utero supply may be to support post-natal development as most of the LCPUFA accumulated by the fetus is stored in the adipose tissue for use in early post- prenatal life.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fatty acids, the immune response, and autoimmunity: A question of n−6 essentiality and the balance between n−6 and n−3

TL;DR: Evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies for a role of AA metabolites in immune cell development and functions shows that they can limit or regulate cellular immune reactions and can induce deviation toward a T helper (Th)2-like immune response.

Transfer across the perfused human placenta of antipyrine, sodium and leucine.

TL;DR: The transfer of antipyrine, sodium, and l -leucine across an isolated cotyledon of human placenta was studied with an in vitro perfusion system, indicating a diffusion limitation very similar to that for monkey Placenta as measured in situ.
Journal ArticleDOI

The estimation of antipyrine in biological materials.

TL;DR: A means of measuring the total water of the body in vivo has been developed and the speed and simplicity of this method recommend it for routine use.
Journal ArticleDOI

Essential fatty acids and fetal brain growth

TL;DR: The data show that the placenta and fetus are radically modifying the maternal phospholipids so as to achieve the high proportions of the C20 and C22 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the structural lipids of the developing brain.
Journal ArticleDOI

Incorporation of radioactive polyunsaturated fatty acids into liver and brain of developing rat.

TL;DR: The results of the present experiments suggested that dietary 20∶4 and 22∶6 were important sources of brain 20∷4 and 21∷6 in the developing rat and possible reasons for these differences are discussed.
Journal Article

Formation of arachidonate lipoxygenase metabolites by human fetal membranes, uterine decidua vera and placenta.

TL;DR: It is suggested that products of lipoxygenase activity in these tissues may regulate the recruitment of leukocytes and/or macrophages during pregnancy and parturition.
